everywhere in that country now. Tourist spots used to be the only safe places.

Eye kunkerr. Clearly people can’t handle spring break so it must be banned! Let’seet in DC in a month & march on the capital demanding spring break control. Who’s with me??

One thing about Cancun. I've been there probably 20 times

Apr 11, 2018, 10:10 AM

But it's been 10 years since I last went. BUT, as I recall, they had the hotel zone fairly secure. To get to the hotel zone you have to pass through a government checkpoint with soldiers with automatic rifles and barricades. Same when driving from the city into the hotel zone. But the city itself was open to the riff raff. If that's still the case, I imagine the city is pretty dangerous. The hotel zone is probably much safer than the city itself.

Last time I went down there we stayed at Maroma, which is on the Mayan Riviera. It's about 20 minutes south of the Cancun airport. To enter the hotel you go through a guard gate with a heavily armed guard who checks your vehicle. Place also had a razor wire fence around it that you could only see driving in. At night there were armed guards dressed in all black, walking around in the bushes with automatic rifles. Freaked wife of out. Super nice hotel, but they have their own security and it is intense.

You're right

Apr 11, 2018, 10:39 AM

Even the road from the airport north to Cancun and south to Playa is very heavily guarded. I went off resort one night and saw multiple military guards with rifles that would make high school kids in florida kick and scream. Not sure how this happened. I'm guessing it was in the seedy "downtown" area, across the lagoon from the resorts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah. The city has always been shady.

Apr 11, 2018, 11:22 AM

Interesting thing. We used to love to go to the flea market and barter with the locals selling stuff downtown. But more recently they won't come down on their prices at all. They're just selling. No wheeling and dealing. I remember people chasing me out of their little stores lowering their prices.

Side note - We once bought a box of Cuban cigars from a vendor in the flea market. Back at the hotel the concierge saw the box and told us they were fake, which we actually figured. He made a call. The next day we had a legit box of Cohiba cigars delivered to our room by the flea market guy in person. Basically the guy didn't want to get blacklisted among the hotels.

Dewd,

Apr 11, 2018, 11:50 AM

Only smoked one Cuban my whole life and it was awesome. I can't imagine getting a box. How much of an upgrade was it? My friend went to Cuba and said he went to a shop where they hand rolled them in front of him and it was the best smoke he's ever had.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Still have two. Probably bad now. Brought box back.

Apr 11, 2018, 12:07 PM

Survived without jail time. They were excellent. Smoked one from the original flea market box and it was crap. New box was legit.

BUT, the best cigar I've ever had was in the hotel lobby bar. We were staying at the Ritz Carlton in Cancun. In the lobby bar, which had an incredible tequila selection btw, they had a guy from Cuba hand rolling cigars to order. He was flown in from Cuba and he was rolling authentic Cubans right there in the lobby bar. Bought two and had them with an awesome tequila. To this day no cigar will ever beat that one, even the real Cohibas in the box.

Apr 11, 2018, 2:28 PM

You don't say? UDP, UDP, UDP

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's meh....ok I guess. Nice for a chain hotel I guess.

Apr 11, 2018, 2:40 PM

It's not La Semana, Maroma, or Hayman Island, but it will do in a pinch when you want to go slumming for loose wimmen.

Re: Dewd,

Apr 11, 2018, 1:59 PM [ in reply to Dewd, ]

I've had plenty of fakes over the years, given as gifts, etc.

My buddy got married in Costa Rica, and we went to the offical Cuban Cigar Store "La Casa del Habano".

We got there and were checked in by security, then we had the run of the entire house. Leather everywhere. We had our own waitress/server (and prostitute, as we joked) that would keep us full of top shelf liquor and cuban cafe, as well as cigars. All was reasonably priced (cheap TBH). We smoked a bunch of cigars, got liquored up, played chess, and drank so much coffee that we were bouncing off the walls. Drunk chess was pretty fun.

If you're ever in a country that has one of these, definitely check it out. It was really fun - especially with a few guys.

The bad spots are awful. I have some friends that are expats from Charleston who are down there now living in Sayulita who are loving it. They have kids in school and everything, chef, a couple maids, a nanny, and a gardener. I on the other hand was almost killed in central Baja once. I will pass on Mexico.

Basically, stripped/stolen 4Runner, left deserted in the middle of nowhere, and just about everything in it was stolen, like I said in the middle of nowhere on a random washboard road in Central Baja, almost died of thirst, saved by some Mexican ranchers, buddy's Bernese Mountain Dog(Stella) died. Sucked
