Because that is the type of relationship I look for with a coffee maker, and I'm looking for recommendations from people who can relate.

It's one thing that is kind of worth the splurge for how much it gets used, and the utility it brings...but that is a stack of cash for a dang coffee maker.

I love/d our latest Ninja. 14-cup so it could brew for a crew. The removable tank was awesome because you could fill that rather than filling it up with water from the carafe that brings in oils from the coffee. And it was rose gold; so pretty.

But the carafe is out of stock and I can't find any after market replacements either. RIP you magnificent bastage.

This is the one that we have. The removable tank just makes so much sense because otherwise your pouring adulterated water right back into the machine. Also no spills from pouring from the carafe into the tank.

I use unbleached paper filters, whole bean coffee, and grind it right before making it. I have a gooseneck kettle from Sur La Table that my wife paid WAYYYYY too much for at Christmas which keeps the water right at 195 degrees.

It can be a little time consuming, like 5 minutes or so to make 8 cups, but it tastes so much better than the exact same coffee in a coffee maker. I know because my brother brought a coffee maker here at Thanksgiving. The pour over method doesn't work for 5 people who drink alot of coffee every day.

I am the only coffee drinker in my house 99% of the time.

I like to buy the whole beans from a couple local coffee shops, but my go to is Aldi's Organic Peru. Cheap and tastes better than anything else I've tried from the store.

Maybe I don't get it, but I don't understand buying a really expensive pod machine. They all seem pretty similar - water tank, pod holder, hole puncher, heater. They all look like they just run hot water through a pod.

I haven't used a drip/pour/pod Americano machine regularly in years. If you're making espresso, or any of the derivatives (latte, cappuccino, macchiato, etc), I've been using a low-end Breville for a good 5 or 6 or 7 years now. "Low end" on espresso machines is still probably $400+, in a space where you can also easily spend $3-4K on some sleek Euro sorcery.

This is the one I have, roughly:

Wifey also got me a Breville grinder that I friggin love, since it accommodates portofilters.

I don’t think it matters much for drip coffee where you’re just dousing the grounds for a while, but for when you need a finer, powdery grind like with espresso, burr makes a big diff.

This is the best coffee maker on the planet.

Had one for about 7 years after having gone through a number of different makers over the years. It is fast and hot and brews the best tasting cup of coffee you will find. Check out reviews and you will see that it is consistently rated THE best. It's pricey and well made. It's not automatic, so you can't set it to go off in the morning without a third party timer, but they argue that setting it up the evening prior doesn't produce the best tasting cup of coffee. You definitely do NOT want a glass pot with warmer. Your second or subsequent cup will taste like crap. Get the carafe.

Get one.

cup within 30 minutes of the first. There is also a screw in plug you can use to keep it warmer longer. If it's not as warm as I like, I just zap it for a few seconds in the microwave. A glass pot with warmer evaporates some of the water and changes the flavor of the coffee for the worst.

I wasn't completely blown away by the taste like I thought I would be; not that it isn't delicious, but I think our Ninja did so well before there wasn't a huge jump.

BUT...the machine is better than I expected in a few other ways. First, the carafe keeps the coffee hot for at least three hours after brew, even without a warmer. I just poured one and it's still hot -- not piping -- but hot and it's right in the range I like it anyhow. And without the warmer baking off water over time, the coffee doesn't get a burned flavor profile after sitting for a bit. So this is where it has the real flavor advantage, IMO.

Secondly, I am preferring the Amazon plug to use as a timer versus one built into the machine because I can set/change it from my phone.

Thanks for the rec!

and mix them 50%/50% to create a richly flavored blend without overloading on caffeine. I have two cups and my wife has one to use up the entire pot(the water fill line on the coffee maker shows 8 cups of water) after putting 8 large scoops of coffee into the brew basket. We use whole beans freshly ground each morning for maximum flavor and we have the Technivorm grinder which doesn't grind the bean into a fine grind, but fairly short of that. We don't load the unit the night before and let it sit, which they say reduces the flavor of the brew, although being able to control it with your phone is pretty cool.

Keep the unit clean with a descaler for maximum flavor and longevity of the heating element. The carafe will get a layer of brown coffee residue and oils on the inside walls. To remove this, simply fill the carafe with water and add a dishwasher pod to it and let is sit overnight. It amazingly removes every bit of the buildup. Initially, I was scrubbing the inside with a dish rag and long wooden spoon for adequate pressure. The dishwashing pod is a piece of cake and much more effective.

We've had ours for years and love it. I'm sure you will too.

The biggest surprise was how long that coffee stays hot without a heat source.

It was our biggest concern because my wife likes to start the brew at 4:45 when she goes to work out, and I can grab a cup when I start work and it's still hot, without tasting burned.

I also won a Moccamaster "canteen" in a contest they ran last week; had to be one of the first five people to reply to their email with a snippet about why you like their machine.

I use a Clemson Turvis tumbler with a top for my morning coffee.

The carafe keeps it pretty warm, but I like to zap my tumbler in the microwave for 15-30 seconds to heat it back up if it has cooled a bit. It doesn't adversely affect the flavor.

The glass carafe on a hot plate setup just kills the flavor of the coffee. I don't see how people can drink that stuff.

Congrats on the canteen! I'll have to check it out.

But have to internally justify $300 for a drip coffee maker so I’ll get geeked over a feature I could have replicated by pouring my coffee from a $100 maker in a $20 vacuum thermos post-brewing.

I’m guessing finding out after the fact that your recommender uses his for half-caff Starbucks grinds has to be analogous to paying a 2-3x premium for a sous vide cooker only to find out that your primary influencer uses theirs to warm up Totino’s pizza rolls.

Not sure what this does or doesn't do compared to the other ones, but it's a breeze to use, brews fast, keeps it hot a long time, and there aren't a myriad of electronics to eventually fail. And, the reviews behind it (both consumer and industry) suggest it is a premium maker worth of the cash. This is not one of the expenditures I'm regretting or second-guessing.

These are just too much for what you’re getting and what drove me to the espresso machine. Also it’s just using centrifugal force to make the crema, so basically like putting coffee in a blender. Not a great substitute for pressure. I’m moving my Nespresso over to my business since I drink a lot less coffee there.

If you’re dropping $60 or more a month on those pods (I was), you can pay for a nice espresso machine and ultimately make a better cup of coffee (and those ARE really good) and justify the expense in a pretty short amount of time.
