It's a question of what is more important. Here's why: At this point, Clemson's resume in terms of win/loss quality is extremely good, as has been discussed ad nauseum by now. Yes, quad-3 losses are not something you want to pick up, but this is only the Tigers' second Q3 loss of the year (and still no Q4's.) So when you look big picture and factor in how good Clemson's resume already is, the team likely won't be hurt very much by the NC State loss, despite it not looking good on its own as a Q3.

The thing is, with the resume already being mostly safe, the effect on Clemson's conference standing is much more important at this point. The Tigers still have a good chance to finish the regular season 4th in the ACC, which would greatly benefit the team's credibility by comparison to other ACC teams and by securing a double bye in the conference tournament. Clemson is currently in a pack of teams with similar records all vying for that 4th seed. The good news is that Tigers either haven't played or have already beaten all of those teams except one, which means they control their own destiny against those teams from here on. The bad news is, the team they lost to was NC State, which would give the Pack the tiebreaker over Clemson. So it would benefit Clemson for State to lose because Clemson needs to finish at least a game ahead of NC State in order to eclipse them in the standings.

So for this reason, I think that result was good for Clemson, because I believe that the benefits of NC State falling behind in the conference standings will far outweigh the negatives of having Clemson's loss to them deteriorate as a result. For some additional good news, Clemson also has a much easier remaining schedule than the Wolfpack, so the Tigers should have a very good opportunity to get that 4th spot because it's very likely that NC State will lose again at least once if not twice or more.

If this were last year, it would be a very different situation because of all the bad losses Clemson already had. But fortunately, this year the Tigers have gotten plenty of great wins and largely avoided the bad losses, which means they shouldn't be nearly as vulnerable to the negative effects of a slip-up as they were a season ago.
