This is stupid. They all knew the rules from the beginning. The rules haven’t changed.
The AG probably loves when someone breaks a law then sues because they don’t agree with the law…

If you were to be a team like the domers, NCAA would change the rules

Its an antiquated rule that should be case by case

not a blanket.
JMU has proven they can compete at their new level. They won Sun Belt last year and are going to win it again this year. They should be able to go to a bowl and receive the money associated with it.
I hope he does sue them. NCAA is irrelevant.

It’s not solely based on competition. It’s mainly academic. FBS teams have higher academic requirements than FCS teams, but the FBS allows three years for transitioning schools to get up to par in academics. The rule is in place to prevent teams with lesser academic standards putting more effort into on field production while FBS teams have to meet a standard to compete.
JMU playing well is actually indicative of why the rule is in place. Whether or not that’s reasonable is certainly up for debate.

Because the NCAA will not allow them to play in a bowl the conference will not let them play for the conference championship. There are bowls willing to take them anyway but what they really want to do is play for the conference championship. The NCAA has a wavier for this situation and JMU has completed all the paperwork and meets all the requirements for the wavier but the NCAA has their heads up their arses.
My nephew plays for JMU. It’s a great program and they do things the right way. If anybody deserves the wavier they do.

Not quite the same, there is supposed to be a "transition year" where they don't play a full D1 schedule. But they didnt get that transition year, and instead jumped straight to a D1 schedule. Which in my opinion makes the rule obsolete.
Like other posters have said, it is an antiquated rule, and they have clearly shown they can compete at this level. Let the kids play!

Agreed. Unsure of why they believe the rules only applies to all the other teams. More money tied up in ignorance.

I don't understand why this rule was ever put in place. I have heard the reason that it was to protect a team and give them time to make the transition, but that still doesn't make sense to me. If a team can move up and meet the criteria other schools do for playing in the playoff and/or bowl, they should be allowed to do so.

Let him sue. VA AG will lose. They sign a contract knowing what the details are before they played a game.

Rules are rules until they are changed and JMU knew the rules before the year started.

Pretentious dinosaur...and so are its members. That anyone is pretending the NCAA code of ethics, or anything similar is absurd. No one's playing football because of academics...it's for money. Pure. And. Simple. The NCAA as arbiter of anything is so far past its time as to be laughable.
Too many rules, laws, etc., exist that are selectively, very selectively applied. It's overdone. Jeebus...even we 'subjects' selectively decide which ones we'll follow...and when. Mostly, they're used to judge others...an individual 'glass house' approach.

Maybe Virginia should focus on why they allow 17 yr old guys to walk in the showers in high schools with 14 year old girls and then tackle that tragic JMU case
