It's all too familiar watching the first quarter evaporate

without scoring. Then find ourselves midway through the second quarter with 3 or 7 points. The defense giving up just enough first downs to allow the other team to punt us deep, which is just a wasted possesion for our offense. Next thing you know you are at halftime with single digits. And this is against any team we play. It could have been Furman and it would have been the same.
I have been following Clemson football since 1972. I can remember the horrible years of 1975 and 1976. Two of our worst football teams lost to Duke 25-21 and tied them 18-18 respectively. In 1980, my Dad and I went to see the last time Duke won in Death Valley. Ben Bennet went wild that day and they won 34-17. But I have never seen a situation where Clemson was completely outclassed by Duke in football.
I knew Duke had 18 starters returning from a 9-3 team, and likely had a better QB than us. I did not think they would have a better offensive line. Not sure why because it seems everyone does. Although I knew an upset was a possibility, and a pretty good possibility, I figured we were different than the mid-70s and 1980. We are a program that is with the elite. I was wrong. We have let the intensity of recruiting go and flat refused to play the portal. And here we are. I hope if we end up looking for another new offensive coordinator, and we hire another big name, that we will have him bring his offensive line coach, running back coach, and wide receiver coach with him. There are too many former Clemson players, with little coaching experience coaching that side of the ball.
