The Proposal for the Carolina/Clemson Rivalry: UPDATE

Nov 8, 2012, 3:29 PM

Hello everyone. You may remember a propsal for the Carolina/Clemson rivalry that circulated some time ago on these boards and many others. This proposal can be read here:

http://thoughtfulgamecock.wordpress.com/2011/06/22/a-proposal-for-the-carolinaclemson-rivalry/

You may have even signed the petition in support of this proposal, which can be found here:

http://www.change.org/petitions/new-carolina-clemson-rivalry-suggestion-clash-of-the-crescent

It may interest you to know that a few days ago, I received this comment at the website where I first published the idea:

To whom it may concern,

The Student Governments at both Clemson and the University of South Carolina have begun work on implementing this proposal as a concrete tradition in the rivalry. Although it's still very much nascent, both Athletic Departments, from our talks with them, seem very interested in the idea and we are keen to carry it through. If whoever wrote this post could contact me at xxxxxxx with the petition that is currently being circulated as well as any other insight you might have, that'd be a great resource for us.

Thank,
Steven Vanderlip

I replied, asking where things stood, and received this e-mail:

Hey Robert,

I hope this finds you well.

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner, but I appreciate your help. I can of course only speak for the University of South Carolina's Student Government as to the exact progress we've made, but we'll be meeting with Eric Nichols, the head of the athletic department's marketing, to discuss the idea in more concrete terms (we really haven't changed the original idea at all, except we do have to accommodate the Hardees trophy in some fashion since they have rights to the game's trophy). Don't worry about encroaching on our efforts; we'd like to hear your ideas!

Clemson's efforts have been a little more fruitful than our own. I just got back from a visit there today and their athletic department has been mulling the idea for awhile now. It's more a matter of finance for them now, however they'd also like to hear us commit to the project as well.

Concerning the petition, the attachment didn't work so if you could send it again that'd be great.

Other than that, thanks again for all the help you've been already. I believe it goes without saying that you will be our first invite to any inauguration event we would have should the proposal go through! The proposal is yours after all; we're just excited to help it out in anyway we can. Thanks again.

Respectfully,

Steven Vanderlip

So many people have asked what happened to this idea, that I figured I'd post this news here, where as many Tiger fans as possible could read and share it. If you liked this idea, but have not yet signed the petition, please do so. Thanks for taking the time to read about, and perhaps support, this idea.

That's pretty awesome, sir.***

I would be willing to donate to this cause....

Nov 8, 2012, 3:33 PM

When the time is appropriate...and of course to the Clemson side of the finances.

I still want us to play for the right to run out w/ the flag

Nov 8, 2012, 3:39 PM

South Carolina currently runs out with their university flag and a state flag, I think it'd be cool to battle over the right to represent our state by running out with the state's flag, while the loser is banned from using that flag in their pregame entrance.

I hope it happens. I got this response from Terry Don when

Nov 8, 2012, 3:43 PM

I wrote to him in early August.

"Mike –

Let’s hold off at this point. I am visiting with our staff on their thoughts.

Thank you,

Terry Don"

Maybe it is because he was leaving but he didn't seem too keen on the idea. Go Tigers.

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't get it. We don't play Carolina in football every year. Basketball, yes. But Carolina is in the Coastal Division and we'll only play them every few years. What's the deal here.

Could we change

Nov 8, 2012, 3:49 PM

the moon to a football on the state flag? That would give'em something to talk about.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who does Hardee's pay for the "rights" to the Trophy?!

Nov 8, 2012, 3:56 PM

That's just absurd. I hope your idea goes through...nice work.

Re: The Proposal for the Carolina/Clemson Rivalry: UPDATE

Nov 8, 2012, 6:08 PM

I'm also curious about the nature of the arrangement with Hardee's. Surely they can't hold exclusive rights to the rivalry in perpetuity, can they? There has to be a buyout, doesn't there? Does anyone know, because I sure don't.

it actually isnt a moon

This is awesome, I have heard this idea proposed before and I agree, this rivalry needs a truly unique trophy and name to take the next big step in national CFB rivalries.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Signed....Good luck on a great idea!***
