Is Clemson the last team to do things the right way?

Dec 8, 2022, 7:31 AM

I hate what I see happening to the rest of college football.

It’s like seeing the girl you started dating in late November that looked OK in jeans and a sweater slowly pack on the pounds until bikini season. You regret putting that non-refundable deposit down on the condo in Myrtle Beach within walking distance of the beach by the time the big Monday to Thursday in mid-March arrives. Sure, she still holds her own compared to the moms coming down from Ohio and Michigan, but the disappointment stings none the less.

I used to be impressed by schools like Stanford, Northwestern and West Virginia that appeared to live up to the academic standards of Clemson under Coach Swinney. But with all this NIL and Transfer Portal nonsense, I bet kids at those schools can’t even tell you how many ft/lbs of torque you should use tightening spark plugs.

And it’s not just the SEC schools paying players anymore. Heck, even Wake Forest has an NIL program. I don’t think they started giving kids new uniforms until a year or two ago and now they probably have backups walking around the locker room in Dolce and Gabbana slippers. It all stinks.

I hear a bunch of people on this board saying we need to change our ways, but in reality it’s just the opposite. Other schools need to take a long look at themselves in the mirror and get back to doing things the right way. Clemson is the last of a dying breed.

End Rant. Go Tigers!

If you're not growing you're dying.

An old business adage that most have heard.

If you fail to continue to innovate and change and/or fail to adapt to your changing environment you will be passed by with significant consequences.

You can definitely not like where things are headed with college football as a whole. I don't like it either! However, attempting to maintain status quo is not a sustainable course of action for continued elite status.

For the program to remain elite it has to field a way to integrate NIL and Portal without completely losing/changing the identity we as a fan base love.

This is a tall order. It will be interesting to see how/if any changes are made.

Is that not the case? I only know one person that went there and he could find his way out of the Denver Downs corn maze faster than anyone I’ve ever met. I just assumed everyone that went to WV was that smart.

After all, we did get President Clements from WV.

Depends on what you mean by the right way.

Army, Navy, Ivy League Schools, Division III.

Those schools recruit athletes who have a goal to graduate and prepare for a career that will be enhanced by earning a degree.

The NCAA decided many decades ago that "the right way" was to recruit the best athletes available, create ways for them to remain "academically eligible," and keep lowering the standards for academic eligibility so that those kids could keep playing until they were ready to go to the NFL or NBA, or until they had played 4 years at the school.

The rules are set up so that is "the right way" to have an athletic program.

True but the service academies /the Ivy League have no expectations to compete for national championships and they pay coaching staffs accordingly.

Not sure why you're saying we're the last. We have plenty of our players doing side gigs with nil. Athletes across all sports at Clemson have deals. And not sure what DJ's deal but it was good. Someone posted that our new qb recruit viz has a 500,000 dollar high school deal.

So what exactly has Stanford done that we have not. Or what are you saying Clemson is doing the right way?

It’s different when Clemson does it. Our student athletes are benefiting from their their name, image and likeness at a fair market value.

The other schools are inflating the value of their players. I bet there are kids at Georgia who have chocolate fountains in their dorm rooms and are paying girls to dress up like Jasmine from Aladdin while doing their homework for them.

The University sets academic standards, not a coach.

I disagree. My JV golf coach told me “D Means Done” during my senior year in high school and let me play every match even though my GPA was barely over a 2.0. The A in PE bailed me out.

If by "right" you mean losing games for 1 player's NIL; yes***

I think there are plenty of schools that hold to their academic standards and take pretty good care of the athletes that are not going to go pro.

The question is, How many of them will be able to stay in the Top 25.

Notre Dame is one. Stanford is a sometimes thing. But neither will ever win another National championship.

We’re doing things the wrong way which is why we’re slowly drifting back to mediocrity

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it's misguided to say that we do it the right way

Dec 8, 2022, 12:58 PM

when we have significantly lowered our academic requirements to allow talented athletes to become Clemson students. This is no different than the hundreds of other institutions who decided years ago to prioritize athletics.

I know you're joking, but it's still worth mentioning.

It may be that Clemson will have to make a choice. ND made that choice after Holtz when they once again tightened up standards. They probably still aren’t close to regular ND standards, but they make it pretty nearly impossible for ND to ever win it all. That’s why Kelly finally gave up. So they have pride in maintaining some integrity and in being relevant. That’s good enough for them.

Then at the other end we have the SEC which will likely ban class for athletes any time now.

So which way to go? How important is it to win the championship of a school sponsored pro league? Much of the ACC is dealing with that dilemma. Same for B1G.
