Probably so, the OL issues have been there, but for how long I’m not sure. I do know a good qb who can get the ball out quick will mask most of the issues with lesser competition. However, once we play elite talent those decencies show.

My son and I had this same conversation. We have been complaining about the line since before Watson.

I'd like to see our top OL recruits not just rely on their talent, but actually improve from year to year and make it to the NFL.
Is this not on Caldwell?
"From talking to scouts around the league, you hear a similar story as to why Mitch Hyatt went undrafted. Hyatt was just as good as a freshman as he was during his senior season. Scouts didn't see him improve from year to year and that turned a lot of them off."

and a national championship. His numbers were only up 10% from his freshman year to his senior year. His best year, unsurprisingly given Bryant's limitations throwing the ball down the field, was his junior year when Bryant was the QB.

I think Renfrow, despite playing QB in HS, came in very polished as a slot receiver. He was an excellent route runner (an area WRs typically improve over their years in college) on day 1 and of course had amazing hands as well. He was already near his ceiling as a player his FR year and his ceiling was largely set by his physical limitations.
I think the main reason his YPC was higher his FR year is due to the absence of Mike Williams after the neck injury. We used him down the field more in 2015 than any other season because we had to. In 2016 we had Williams back on the outside, in 2017 Bryant couldn't throw down field so it was paramount to have Renfrow underneath, and in 2018 we had Higgins and Ross.

Sometimes a really gifted athlete rocks it in high school - man among boys. But then, when he gets to college he doesn't have the drive or the toughness to really improve as a man among men.
Caldwell might have some responsibility here, but it might be on Mitch.
I WOULD like to see our O_Line become a little nastier and take pride in manhandling opponents.

Hyatt was a top recruit, Carman THE top guy at position by some rankings. Bockhorst was highly rated if I recall. So what is the commonality? They didnt gst that much better by year 3/4. We have guys all over the league at every position except O Line. Am I the only one who thinks that odd?

Perhaps Clemson is relying too much on the skill players. The speedy wide outs and great runners get you to the dance, but it's the hogs that help you win it. What a crazy image....dancing hogs.

I sure hope not. But based on the product Caldwell has put on the field over the last 5 years, he's been a "bust" as a coach.

We had a great season and Caldwell is a proven winner and good coach. We have some good ones coming back and have recruited good ones for this year. Why would Dabo change something that has worked. Robbie may be looking to retire soon, but he is more than qualified and one of Dabo's best hires a few years ago. The staf is outstanding. Look at the recruits here and the ones coming in. Do we want to start doing like Carolina and Auburn and start blaming coaches. Players have to play also. Our DBs were so, so and our receivers were hurt so we lacked depth there. However, we were the ACC Champs. Alabama didn't even make the final 4 last year. We will be back.

"Best is the standard".
Caldwell has created one draft pick in the top 3 rounds over the last 10 years. Think about that. And do we want to start blaming coaches? I don't know, maybe. Dabo occasionally blames coaches. Ask Kevin Steele about that.

I just wonder if will be the one coaching him. Ohio State couldn't sniff the QB for Indiana or North Western, and ETN couldn't get a running lane most of the season....just wonder if it's time for some new blood.

Caldwell isn't going anywhere unless he retires or gets a better job. Not saying he would or could just saying he isn't going anywhere. For me I think the o-line lacks killer instinct. I want guys that drive dudes into the ground after the whistle. I just think it's the type of guy that is recruited by Clemson or attracted by Clemson. Most of these young men are so well rounded and humble young men that pile driving a dude into the ground just isn't their mindset. Maybe I'm wrong but that is just my opinion. When they face a d-line that has those killer instincts they tend to not do very well. In the ACC Clemson has that reputation of being the big dog and their is kind of an aurora around that. You can tell when Clemson plays an ACC team that doesn't care Clemson is Clemson. Those are usually the teams that give them fits. Well teams like Bama and Ohio State carry that same aurora around them so you need that extra bit when playing those teams and for whatever reason sometimes Clemson doesn't come in with "I'm going to rip your head off and #### down your neck" attitude. Who knows if they'll ever be that because Dabo has built this program on not being that. The underdog card only works when you're the underdog and Clemson is no longer an underdog, they're expected to be their and perform.

it may be recruiting that could be more consistent there. I'm sure he's had a token high spot recruit here and there but i think these younger kids probably gravitate more to a high energy guy that an old timer. I mean, i'd prefer the old timer but i'm 40 something and am not impressionable anymore.
