I have amassed many interesting facts about the game on Monday night... Thought I might as well share:
* Clemson had more first downs than Duke had points.
Teams that had 29+ first downs were 15-0 in Week 1 before Monday night.
The teams with 29+ first downs: • Oregon - 37 (W by 74) • Oklahoma - 36 (W by 73) • Syracuse - 34 (W by 65) • Ole Miss - 32 (W by 66) • UCF - 32 (W by 50) • UAB - 31 (W by 25) • Cincinnati - 30 (W by 53) • Maryland - 30 (W by 32) • Pitt - 30 (W by 38) • WSU - 30 (W by 26) • Colorado - 30 (W by 3) • Cal - 29 (W by 37) • Tennessee - 29 (W by 36) • GA Southern - 29 (W by 34) • WMU - 29 (W by 18) • Clemson - 29 (L by 21)
* In Clemson’s last two games the Tigers have had 16 drives that went inside the opponents 40 yard line. They scored 21 points on those drives. Two TD, two FG and 12 drives with zero points.
* In the third quarter, Clemson ran more plays in Duke territory than Duke ran total. Duke outscored Clemson 7-0 that quarter.
* In the second half Clemson neither punted nor scored.
* The first time in Clemson history that they passed for 200+ yards, rushed for 200+ yards, and lost the game (previously 108-0 as a program, 58-0 under Dabo).

12 drives with no points inside the 40. Makes you think that as bad as we are not that far off from beating most teams anyways.

It simply goes to the importance of two things:

1. An experienced QB 2. Turnovers
This ain’t hard.

Cade should have played a lot more last year.

I'm satisfied Dabo played DJ longer to build his stats and make it easier for him to land at Saint Elsewhere.

This is decidedly not true, and is believed only by the DJU

detractors.
Dabo was trying to get back to the CFP last year, and save for the WR group, he had the team. It was the WR group and the insane "option attack" that ultimately broke him.
Cade was not ready, and we would have lost 1 or 2 more games if we had made him the starter.

DJU was the worst QB that I've seen at Clemson since maybe Patrick Sapp (a linebacker converted to QB)...and that's arguable. And he is absolutely no better at Oregon State. He's a statue in the pocket, has no ability to read a defense, and still locks on to his primary receiver.
He may have been good in practice, but that certainly didn't translate to the field.

DJ derangement syndrome.
If you can't be unemotional, then be silent.
With Cade at the helm last year, we're 8-4 to 7-5. That's it.
Doesn't matter what DJU would have done - stop ranting about DJU. This is about Cade. It is what it is. He will come around but it isn' there even yet, even after another Spring & Summer.

while losing by 17.
29 1st downs against Duke, scored 7, and lost by 21.
Ill be curious to see if this trend continues, but we are making a good case that # of 1st downs is a pretty meaningless stat.

Thanks for the stats. That’s what it felt like watching on TV. To make a golf comparison, you can outdrive your opponent, hit all the fairways, lead in greens in regulation , but still suck at getting the ball in the hole, the only stat that really matters!

This is the thing about first downs.

If we have a 2nd and short (for example) we are always running the ball. We NEVER take shots downfield like you see other teams do (especially in the NFL).
We get super conservative and are very content to just move the chains.
Its a philosophy for sure but this way you need to make far more first downs to score and eliminates a lot of big play potential which has been our issue. I think also causes a lot of drives to bog down as we get on our 5th or 6th first down play needed in opponents territory and luck runs out.
I think this is all Dabo on the calls as he always talks about "being on schedule". I think a lot of DCs have picked up on our trends.
