CD ladder is an old and conservative investment approach

I have been managing one for about 10 months. Started with rates 4.5 to 5.0 and now 5.0 to 5.4.

Easy money and safe. No reason not to do it.

Why not just open a high-interest on-line savings account...

and not worry about the term, laddering, etc...

I recently opened a CIT Bank account paying 5.25% that compounds daily/applied monthly and it's FDIC insured. Can move money in and out at will.

I think you can get 5.06% there now.

Interest on a high yield savings account (HYSA) is variable ...

CD rates are locked for term. HYSA have had similar returns over last year or so but that may be true when rates start declining.

In general, yes, but most of the deals lock the intro rate...

for a period.

The CIT Bank account I just opened was 5.25% locked for 6 months. They don't have that offer now...it's 5% rate and variable.

I've been bouncing between HYSAs when the intro rate expires and then adjusts, if it's down.

It may have changed, but last I looked, the high-yield CD accounts are short-term CDs for 3 or 6 months...maybe sometimes a year-ish, right?

For me, I like the easy access, in and out, of a HYSA vs a CD that's locked in normally.
