In Anchorage AK to ice fish with record highs of 45 degrees

After they had record snowfalls of 112" by January at my uncles and over 500" down by Whittier. Went to 2 ski resorts yesterday with a lot of skiers on holiday and they were skiing in 42 degree temps with rain and slush. Two weeks ago a lot of AK was -52F. What a swing!

We are leaving at 6am to head into the interior where we will stay in remote cabin for a week. It was 16F for high today. Looks like by Sunday we will get negative 20s. I sure hope we dont have to sit on frozen lake with rain and 40 degree snow slush as weather gets pushed from Alaska Gulf to the North.

I know I am not normal but I go on vacations in the northern tundra because I hate being hot but I live in SC. Hopefully we catch some giant lake trout and we survive the warmth if cometh!

an adventure.

Some years ago, my oldest nephew was assigned to an air base near Anchorage, moved there and called me, saying, "Wow, Uncle H, I can't believe how cold it is!"

I asked, "Well, where in the hellll did you think you were going...Hawaii?" We had a big laugh.

Have watched a number of the so-called reality shows about Alaska, and it's incredulous the resolve of those who brave that climate to live there. More power to them, I say.

stripers when it dropped into the 20s overnight in January and February...70 MPH in 20 degrees will get your motor pumping...But, sitting on ice...below...well below...FREEZING...is borderiline insane. Of course, there are those who would say sitting in the middle of several gators and fishing is borderline insane....Anyway, good luck. I just hope it is cold enough to have thick ice underneath you!!

it was SIXTY degrees, and the wind was blowing. I was so cold by the time I got to my "spot" that I could barely crank the reel. That was one of the last times I went out before I gave up fishing for golf. I really could not imagine going out on the water if it was TWENTY. Good on you if you can stand it. I suspect the fact that you actually catch fish, instead of mostly just wasting gas and breaking expensive stuff like I used to, that makes the difference.

The Weather Channel was on at lunch one day and it said the temp in International Falls, Minnesota was -47°. Someone said could you imagine dressing to gout in that. My reply was, "It wouldn't be a problem. I would put on everything in my closet and go out 1 time and get on something going south!"

Good fishing and be safe!

We have great friends in a remote area of Alaska and have spent time with them. There is nothing more relaxing than taking in the beauty of the last frontier in pure quiet and no cell service!

I have a friend who takes those trips annually. They wrap their fresh caught fish fillets in aluminum foil and cook them on their cabin's wood stove.
