I'm with Dabo

This whole portal mess has completely ruined the game.

In addition, these are young adults that Dabo (and all other purposeful College coaches) are trying to mold into successful men after football are being ruined. What lessons are being taught. When the going gets tough, move on to the next gig. This short sightedness is detrimental to college football and society (workforce). We see the same in the current job market.

In my 25 years in the workforce (after graduating grad school), held 2 jobs (only switched because moved to a different state). This was common for my generation and prior generations. These days, when looking to hire someone, it is difficult to locate a dedicated, loyal employee - people are jumping to a new job every 1-2 years (or less) just because they hit a tough patch. We all encounter adversity - it is only temporary. If I'm reviewing a resume with job hopping, it goes in the garbage - don't need to waste training time/resources on someone that can be perceived as "selfish."

I perceive the same with the transfer portal - I see "selfishness" - looking out for me and letting down the "team." Very few instances where I can see that a transfer is best for the individual and the team. We have also seen, in the majority of the cases, that the grass is not always greener. I feel Beaux would have been better off with Clemson (from a professional career decision standpoint) - time will tell.

I think it’s just a reflection of how the whole world works nowadays.

People are unfaithful, money driven, and prideful.

You know reading a bit of scripture can ease the mind with this by the way.

These players do not have it good.

The NCAA is a disgrace. These guys are 18 and 19 years old, they need stability.

And apparently the only way a player will have stability now is if they are on a good team and want to stay. Or if they are getting paid enough.

Can I ask what's wrong with being money driven at WORK? That's the point last time I checked.

If two companies want my services and one pays more, what is wrong with choosing the later exactly?

You can't complain about the youth being "money drive" while simultaneously saying they hate capitalism.

He's only been out of school about three years (a TCU grad) with a degree in insurance and risk management, so he's still relatively inexperienced. All of his questions were about salary demands (not requirements), being a remote employee, requiring a company car, and the amount of his signing bonus.

This new breed coming into our company are definitely different. This company had very little TO but now if someone has any gripes there is a good chance they will quit.

We got a young employee who wants to negotiate his raise. I am starting the negotiations at zero.

It's not your Daddy's force. Staying with a company long-term is generally detrimental to your career and paycheck. About the only way to get a real raise is to change companies. Unlike college football teams your company will kick you to the curb in a heartbeat.

The problem with the portal to me is that you might as well separate college football from the colleges as many only see it as their farm league to the pro's.

Eventually, there will be a trading system for college players at the rate it is going. One day a player will come in and be told, "You no longer go to school here. You now attend UCLA...pack your bags.

Companies take advantage of employees who want to be "loyal". Some of them pay their new hires more than their longtime employees are making. If you aren't at least getting enough of a raise every year to keep up with inflation, you're effectively taking a pay cut. Pensions are a thing of the past in most industries these days. Employees shouldn't be expected to be any more loyal to their employers than the employers are to them, which is not at all in most cases.

Bang on. Let's add to this that you could have 30 years with a company and one day a new hire says you looked at her wrong...out the door you go, no trial, no nothing. Saw it happen twice a Boeing, just the accusation caused a firing. And remember SC is an employment a will state. That means your employer does not even need a reason.

Cause I've only left jobs because of terrible management who refused to give raises......worked at one place, missed about 4 days in 5 years. I asked for a raise and he said, "we'll look into it and see if you deserve one...." I left the next day.

The thing about the portal to me is that it says several things more than "I am a great player that is a must have."

1. It says I am a disgruntled person and will probably bring that vibe to your team.
2. I failed to perform well enough to be the #1 at my position so I am looking for a school that lets me be the #1. This usually means moving down.
3. I am following a coach to wherever his next gig is.

The reality is its just economics, not loyalty

CFB didn’t used to have NIL and the portal so the economics were getting players to the NFL and/or a quality degree. The economics have changed so the behavior has changed.

In the job market you used to have defined benefit plans, steeply increasing vacation time and other things that made sticking with a company make economic sense. Employers have largely done away with pensions and we have a labor shortage. The economics have changed to encourage employees to look at short term gains - hiring bonuses, salary and job satisfaction.

That's great and I'm glad it worked for you, but you are leaving a lot of money on the table if you do that today.

If I was at my original job, I would probably make 3% - 5% raises every year. MAYBE the occasional 10%. Every time I switched though, I got a sizeable bump, around 15% - 50% raises.

If I stayed at the original job or two, I'd be making less than half what I do now. That means, those employers were willing to pay me less than I'm worth. How is that loyalty? Why don't you consider THAT to be money driven?

I don't owe anything to a company outside what I agreed to do contractually. I will do that and do it well, but I will always choose my (and my families) the best interest over any company.

> I perceive the same with the transfer portal - I see "selfishness"

Maybe you should take a step back and see the big picture. Where is the money currently going? Who's getting it? Why shouldn't the players, you know, the entire product, get a slice of that. Who's actually being selfish here?

They ruined the game. You will not know from one year to the next who's coming back. It's the wild wild west. Minors for the NFL with no salary caps and no contracts. The smaller schools who can't compete with NIL will be left behind, and if you are not one of the 12 the bowls wouldn't even matter. They will be a joke. The success of the program will live and die are 12 playoff spots.
