I've now come to the shaky realization that the Klubnik isn't who we thought he was.

Yes, he can look really good at times, but so did DJU.

Or both. They had a system that worked. And some great QB's. I mean QB's that came out of HS big-game ready. And we weren't afraid to throw them to the wolves. Deshawn's first game was against a tough UGA team, as a true freshman, and he never backed off.

Dabo also used to rotate a lot more players. It's a chicken or egg thing though. Did rotating in fresh, hungry guys make everyone better? Way I see it, if you're doing mediocre at your position, ALL positions are fair game for rotations, even QB.

CJ/Amari Rogers, etc. on offense. NFL-type players that can take over and bust a game wide open. Our best guys on offense are good, but a notch below, and I think that's the difference. We didn't know when we signed all of those guys that they'd all work out so well, but we knocked it out of the park with all of them; they all had that "something extra" that didn't take long to be obvious. I don't know if it's so much misses or bad evaluations, as it's that for one reason or another, luck or whatever, most of our best recruits over the last few years just haven't had that superstar factor.

Personally, I don't think that explains all of the failures we have witnessed the last couple of years, but I think that's most of it. We just haven't had that elite talent.

Until after NCSU. More traditional run plays were emphasized after that game. Fewer RPO and two TE packages allowed more aggressive o-line play.

WR injuries have also greatly hampered the passing game and may have limited CKs development. QB / WR chemistry is significant for a young QB.

Cade didn't drop a handful of passes in every game...

1

Nov 28, 2023, 6:26 AM
Reply

he didn't miss field goals and he wasn't responsible for all of the fumbles.

Cade shows promise. Over this season about 20% of his passes to receivers crossing the field have been caught. Half there were dropped, one or two was thrown high, a handful behind causing the receiver to have to stop and a few too low to be caught.

Less of the problem is on Cade than on the receivers. However, Cade is getting more accurate, the receivers not so much.

DJ never showed any improvement in this area. If you read Hood's latest article you'll see Dabo was refusing to allow passes partly because the defense decided our WRs weren't getting behind them. That was a Brent Venables prevent which worked. Had the crossing receiver caught a few of those the deep ball would have opened up a bit. It just wasn't there.

Cade still didn't see the field. If that's something negative about him that leaves him and DJ equal in deficiencies. Otherwise Cade is head and shoulders ahead of DJ already and Cade didn't get half the playing time last season that DJ did in TL's last year.

I continue to feel that had Dabo sat DJ around the 4th or 5th game last year and let Cade learn rather than handing the ball off with less than two minutes on the clock we would have gotten over the hump last season. We probably wouldn't have made the playoff but most of the pain of not being able to replace TL would be gone.

Cade's problem is what can't be taught.

General football IQ. He's a hellluva athlete with a nice arm and pretty quick feet, good enough that they got the job done in High School.

But he's missing the ability to go through progressions, recognize mismatches, identify blitzes, read defenses, step up in the pocket when available and feel pressure. Furthermore, he doubles down on that progression shortcoming by honing in laser-like time after time and throwing to a double-covered WR while another WR is often running free, and the reason that WR is double covered is that he's been staring them down from the snap.

I figured a lot of this would come with exposure to the faster college game this season, but honestly I haven't seen much difference from game 1 to game 12.

good QBs at any level have swag, until they hit their ceiling on ability. I don't see it from him, despite having the tangibles (speed, arm strength, decent size)

Less effective than they could be.

Watch TL throw one. He usually gave a glance away from the WR to freeze the D before turning and throwing an absolute laser to the WR. Both resulted often in the WR having enough room to operate before the DB/Safety got there.

CK immediately turns to the target, the DB starts breaking to the WR immediately, and then Cade floats a pass in there that the WR often has to adjust to. It’s why they’re usually getting demolished the minute they catch the ball.

I get the OL issues, the WR not being good - but Klubnik has really bad habits in the pocket that they can't seem to break and is so turnover prone that I don't think the light is ever coming on even with upgrades in WR and OL

DJU didn't develop into the 5* all world QB everybody expected, and now CK is mistake-prone and underperforming to nearly identical stats. IMO, we didn't miss on two in a row. We're just not developing them.

On the bright side, we're now using TE's in the offense and taking chances downfield. For as flaccid as this offense has looked at times, I think offensive playcalling has greatly improved. Players just need to start making plays.

A couple years ago. TL stayed pretty static in his abilities and actually took some steps back his last year (it was a high bar so steps back are relative), DJ simply regressed from the moment he got here, and now we have Cade looking like a deer in headlights after starting 13 games.

On top of that, no one ever seems to notice the fact that we’ve gone almost a decade with (if our coaches are to be believed) no viable backup QB to insert into games when our current one finds himself pooping the bed. The job of the coaches isn’t just to have a starting QB ready to go, but his backup too. And yet whether it’s Johnson, Helms, Pumapants, whoever, we’re told they aren’t able and ready to go in when the starter is just stinking it up out there.

because that's always when some kid with one eye, a club foot, and a deformed throwing hand comes in and wins the Heisman Trophy against us. When we have to go to a backup in a critical situation, ours will almost always look like a porpoise trying to reel in a shotgun snap and then throw it with his non-dominant fin.
