But I never thought DJ was as good as he was ranked coming out of high school. I specifically remember thinking he lacked touch and accuracy, with his receivers making good adjustments and catches. I never really got too hyped up for him, especially in the off season after Trevor left. Just had a weird feeling about him.
Just don’t understand how the staff thought he was such a great fit for our offense. Round hole, square peg. Then again, they clearly don’t see anything wrong with the team this year so maybe that explains it.
DJ doesn't lack the ability to be accurate (witness the two absolutely spectacular throws he made in the first half touchdown drive against NC State, or the TD pass to Ngata last night). But his consistency is clearly not there. To use a baseball pitcher analogy, neither S.Koufax or N.Ryan were any good in their early years in the Majors. Both had fantastic stuff and would have an occasional spectacular game during their early years. The talent was obvious. But it took a while for both Koufax and Ryan to gain consistency.
Will DJ acquire the consistency before end of 2021 season? Doubtful for next few games, but maybe showing signs of life before end of the season.
Will DJ acquire the consistency before start of 2022 season? Maybe (fingers crossed).
How about before start of 2023 season (his senior year). Much better chance. (He sure as heck is not going to be an early-entry to the NFL draft.)
