Realignment rumors.

They are more fun to follow than tracking Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve, and about as accurate.

I've been hearing and reading rumors about conference realignment for over two years. But, they have reached a fever pitch since the CFP put Bama in the playoffs.

Want to believe something about any team? There is a rumor that will tell you your belief will come to pass. Here are just a few that I've seen in the past two weeks.

FSU and Clemson are a package deal. Going to SEC.
FSU and Clemson are a package deal. Going to B1G.
FSU is going to B1G and Clemson is going to Big 12.
FSU is going to B1G and Clemson will be left hanging in the ACC.
Miami is going to B1G with FSU.
Miami is going to Big 12.
FSU and UNC are going to B1G. Clemson and UVA are going to SEC.
UNC and UVA are going to B1G.
UVA and VT are a package deal and will go somewhere together.
The ACC and Big 12 will form an alliance but not merge.
After the SEC and B1G get 4 to 8 teams from ACC, the remaining teams of the ACC will dissolve the conference and join the Big 12.
Washington State and Oregon State will join the Big 12.
BC and Cuse will be left out, not getting an invite into any conference, including Big 12.

48 teams will break away from NCAA and form their own organization to govern football. This will mean schools like Vandy, Kentucky, Indiana, Northwestern and a few others will not be included in the 48, but will remain in their conferences for other sports.

Pick the one you want. I've given up on predicting the timeline.

But, I do agree that when it all shakes out there will be a group of schools that breakaway from the current regulations of the NCAA and set up their own governing body and that FSU and Clemson will be included in that group.

How we get from here to there, I have no idea. You guess is as good as mine. And, all those guesses I listed above are probably no better than mine or yours. If you make enough guesses, probably a couple of them will be right.

southern schools to join at the same time. If FSU talking to the B1G, I’m sure they would want Clemson to join them…but if the B1G said “sorry…we would take you with Miami but not with Clemson” I’m confident that FSU would have no issue with that.

Of course, I have no actual idea how these decisions are made.

If you're talking about getting past the CFP selection committee decision, I'm doing fine. Disappointed, but not distraught. It was a decision I disagreed with, but it's only football. Their decision cannot change the fact that FSU far exceeded expectations and went 13-0. Their decision can't change the fact that it appears Norvell is re-establishing the program and will bring FSU back to being a competitive team on a consistent basis.

As an outsider looking in, I felt like the raging that Norvell and folks at FSU were doing had overshadowed a monumental accomplishment that the players should be proud of. I get being disappointed, in the CFP decision, but I just felt he should have chosen to take that platform to talk about how proud he was of his team. Maybe he did at some point and I missed, but I thought that was unfortunate.

Any governing body would be a step in the right direction. What we have now is the Wild West and college football at least the kind we grew up enjoying will soon be a distant memory. I’m afraid they will have run off a good many fans by the time they get this sorted out. Really embarrassing that the NCAA and the college presidents have let it get to where we are.

Next 3 years.
1.) the Big 10 and the SEC will dominate the 12 team playoff selections, simply because of the TV deals and in reality they have the most prominent teams
2.) at some point during this time there will be a mass exodus of the ACC that will lead to 3 20-24 team conferences. If the BIG 10 were smart they would do everything they could to land UVA, UNC, Clemson, FSU, Miami and have a standing invite to ND. This gets them in the south with the SEC. So the SEC will either try and fight this and go after some of those or not. BIG 12 I think will try to get Nc State, Ga Tech, Louisville, Pitt and Va tech to go with current additions Cin, WV and UCF.
3.) this Frenzy ultimately makes a governing body of football only that shares tv revenue across the 48-64 teams with a big playoff and maybe back to 11 reg season games

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Does the SEC and ESPN really want to risk the Big 10 coming in their turf?

2

There are a handful of big brands in the ACC that ESPN has exclusivity over. We can say Clemson, FSU, and UNC.

Additionally, considering geography, the ACC/SEC/ESPN own largely populated and growing states in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Would the SEC and ESPN really not be proactive in protecting their turf for recruiting, sponsorship, ratings, number of playoff teams, and tv ratings from the Big Ten and FOX.

Under normal circumstances, Clemson and FSU wouldn't be on the Big 10's radar since they aren't AAU schools, but with the money, geography and battle for ratings and top brands, they are in the mix.

Oregon is an AAU school, but not a prestigious or elite school. They admit 90% of applicants. Neither is Nebraska which is no longer an AAU school.

I have no clue if or when the Grant of Rights will be broken, but the SEC and ESPN would be doing themselves a favor by being proactive in protecting their geographic territories and the brands they already have under contract from going to the Big 10 and FOX. If they were to lose Clemson, FSU, UNC and others, it would be a long time before they get a chance to get them back.

Normally I'd say that they have much more important things to do, but the way things are going, I think it might be warranted, as much as I hate getting Washington involved in anything.

Even if all they do is order a reorganization that actually makes sense and is remotely equitable, I'd be for it. Kind of like when they broke up Ma Bell back in the 80s.

Congress will only propose a solution that creates a quasi government corporation that will include provisions for a future collective bargaining agreement with said corporation. This legislation will be written with major involvement of the SEIU. The players become employees and hitch their financial future to union labor. This will all be done under the illusion of caring about player safety. It’s already being sold to the public by Sen Booker.

If you agree with the involvement of unionized labor this is your solution. If you don’t you will hate it. However, the bottom line is they will figure out how to add to the trillions of national debt in the process.

They really should have skipped all this BS and Created a Football League separated from the NCAA regulations and just left the conferences alone for all other sports.

Does it really make sense for the PAC 12 teams to travel to the ACC and vise versa. The Football teams in this league could still help support the other teams at their school while keeping the regionality and history together.

My thoughts as well. Sometimes I think it would be best for Clemson to wait and be patient for the football super conference to arrive. The university might avoid 100’s of millions in expenses trying to get into a P2 conference setup that then becomes obsolete a couple years later. Meanwhile, the rest of Clemson sports can remain in a regional based ACC where we are mostly happy for the majority of the non revenue sports.

I think the NCAA ruling last week (allowing a subdivision where teams can pay players) is a preemptive move to try to prevent that exact thing from happening. They want to be involved, and they saw the writing on the wall.

Doesn’t mean it still won’t happen (especially with Title IX issues), but that definitely buys the NCAA some time.

I just have a feeling that, when FSU officially declares it’s leaving the ACC and sues to leave, Clemson is going to also file for a 1-2 punch that KOs the GORs. Clemson just released a plan structure and to apply for AAU membership, which doesn’t make since unless they’re going to the B16 (also, it makes sense for a lot of the academic expansion, which, as an alumnus, I’m all for). The timing itself would be one #### of a coincidence if Clemson weren’t headed to the B16.

I agree except I think we are shooting for AAU membership to have the option to join the B16 and to potentially force the SEC to make a move first to hold its territory. The SEC is in no rush to make a move on Clemson or FSU unless the B16 is coming. I would love Clemson, FSU, NCState, UNC, and GT in the SEC. I also see the perks of B16 membership.

That was a good summary of everything I am hearing.

I am and always have been afraid of Clemson getting left behind or forced to join the big 12.

If the SEC adds Clemson, their total contract with ESPN is not going to increase to where the sum is greater than the parts. It will if it adds a UNC with a UVA. You get more money for adding more states (for now).

The BIG would like a Florida connection for recruiting and similar to USC and UCLA could add a Miami+FSU.

I would like FSU, Miami, Clemson, GT, UNC, NCState, Duke, UVA, and VT to break away from the ACC and start our own conference.

Or I would like the Football to go and become its own thing like the NFL. Football is just different from other sports and academic priorities (unfortunately).

Of note, I am anti-transfer and anti-NIL. If you want to go pro, go to the NFL, NBA, if not you can go to college and play by amateur sport rules.

This real life Game of Thrones.

SEC makes pod scheduling with Clemson's being UofSC FSU and Georgia or UNC FSU Florida Auburn and Clemson UNC who knows probably Vandy U of SC Tenn ?? Kentucky ??. Could care less about the big 12

You are dreaming a pipe dream.

SEC will only add if the $ (i.e. "ESPN") is there to add. ESPN is not going to pay $2 for something they already have a contract to buy at $1.

The B1G will add, because Fox will pay to add. And they will add whomever Fox tells them they are willing to pay for. The only way the SEC moves if if ESPN has its hand forced by the B1G.

I’m a massive college football fan, but combining academics with athletics the way we did was one of the absolute worst ideas we ever had. Think about how many schools’ degrees were watered down in the past 100 years, and the amount of corruption it’s caused. We should have went with the club style Europe has. College athletics in the US is quirky and unique which makes it a blast, but I don’t know that it’s worth jeopardizing your institutions of higher learning in the process.
