Larry Williams tweet about Monte....

Mar 9, 2016, 9:40 AM

Absolutely no question remains: Monte was/is a great hire. The team is playing loose, having fun and is full of confidence. This gives some good insight as to why.

It's not betting against the Tigers. It's betting that a particular coach won't still be here in four years. In the landscape of college sports it's actually a pretty safe bet. You're the one reading into.

I noticed you were amazingly absent during the Wins over the Chickens after running your mouth all day on Friday.

I had a HS baseball coach believe in yelling/belitting guys

Mar 9, 2016, 9:54 AM

when they messed up. He also was notorious for pulling position players in the middle of innings when they made errors. It was pretty embarrassing and luckily it never happened to me. It happened to one of my best friends once though and he never started again after it (it completely destroyed his confidence). It made EVERY guy uptight and scared for their job. We never had success, mainly to blame for him holding us back. All the guys just ignored him and came together to play for each other. There's no quicker way to lose your team if you consistently yell when things are bad but are quiet when things are going good. I liked my coach off the field but he was over the top in the dugout.

I'm not saying never get on your team's @ss, but you gotta realize there's a line there and you can't cross it when people make mistakes. I'm also not saying Jack did this to the guys and this is what made them tight. But everything in that Monte quote is 10000% true.

I had a high schol soccer coach like that....

Mar 9, 2016, 11:16 AM [ in reply to I had a HS baseball coach believe in yelling/belitting guys ]

But for a couple of his favorites who routinely made mistakes that hurt the team, several other guys on the team played in constant fear of being pulled from the game if they made even the slightest mistake. We were pretty good, largely because we all played together for several years, but we always seemed to play tighter than a snare drum.

I did two tours as a Marine Corps DI...also played baseball

Mar 9, 2016, 11:16 AM

in HS and college for two totally different style coaches. My HS coach would light us up for not hustling, running our mouths, or mental errors only....never said a word about a physical error except to pat you on the back to "get 'em next time". My college coach was abrasive almost all of the time, especially to pitchers and catchers, and he would say things like, "HAVE AN IDEA OUT THERE!" after an error, and it would continue once in the dugout. That type of belittlement can take the wind out of an 18 to 22 year old kid, period. We were playing East Carolina my sophomore year and I picked an outside fastball out of the dirt, made the throw down to second off balance, the ball rode up and away but the 2B man still caught it, tagged the guy on the helmet but dropped the ball. Ump signaled OUT then safe once ball came out. Next hitter up hit a 2 run bomb and we lost 4-2. After the inning he grabbed me and said, "YOU HAVE TO MAKE A BETTER THROW THERE!" in front of the whole team. The ball was 2 feet outside, shorthopped into my mitt and I still had the guy out before the ball came out of our 2B man's glove. We dealt with that stuff all of the time. We played tight and afraid to fail. My HS coach had an impact on me forever, as I suspect Monte Lee will with these kids. As a DI in the Marine Corps, I was a savage, ruthless, nasty SOB all day, every day because I was training those idiots to survive combat. Sports is not combat in any way, shape or form. Players need to be loose through a long, grinding season of baseball. That sport is different than any other game. You can get shut out one day and blow a team out the next because of pitching, etc.. Monte Lee is the truth, period. Best hire other than Dabo we have made in YEARS.

just because the coots won a national title, that had more to do with it than anything else. Never, ever go into freak out mode just because some Johnny come lately coot fans talk trash. In the end the tide turned back in our favor against the coots, before Leggett was let go. Even with all the negativity from the baseball fanbase.

That said Lee is a great hire, but he is taking over a good team. We didn't have this huge drop off, that the baseball fanbase made it out to be. The purpose of your post was just to take a shot at Leggett. But, it doesn't work because the tide had turned back to us in our rivalry against the coots, before Leggett was let go.

Just celebrate the baseball team's victories. Don't use each victory to slam an all time Clemson great and class act.

Re: Larry Williams tweet about Monte....

Mar 9, 2016, 1:41 PM

Let me ask you something RB. This is your statement: "no question remains: Monte was/is a great hire." You're making an absolute declarative statement after 10 games. How long is this assessment good for? What happens if we go .500 in ACC and don't make the post-season? Is it still "no question?" You guys are acting exactly like the Coots who are over on FGF pretending they truly believe Muschamp is gonna deliver them to the promised land. How about let him coach a game, or in Lee's case get through an ACC series. Since you've decided no questions remain it kind of sounds like whatever happens from here out is irrelevant because Lee is unquestionably the best choice. Therefore he's free to not win another game the rest of his career because, well, he doesn't need to - it is unquestionable that he's the right choice. Can you see that maybe that is a little silly?

You remind me of the same morans who said the same things about Tommy Bowden.

But more to the point, I don't know what agenda you have in trying to undermine Coach Lee. Either get on board, or get out.

Why will he not be here in 4 years? We won't see a big enough improvement and will run him off? Or they'll be so much improvement that a school will offer him a small island to come be their coach and we won't pay enough to keep him? Just curious as to why u think it's a good bet he'll be gone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Larry Williams tweet about Monte....

Mar 9, 2016, 2:20 PM

Short answer, because I've done this more than once. 1) Coaches rarely succeed following a legendary coach. In fact, Leggett is pretty much the only example in Clemson history. 2). Clemson has a terrible history of outside coaching hires. Virtually every high level successful coach at this school has already been on campus when they became coach. Noonan is one of the only exceptions. 3) Clemson has demonstrated that it is not investing in sports other than football at a level above the conference median - if he is successful he will be a target for a lot of schools, not the least of which is South Carolina who may very well come calling after this year.

I hope he wins big, goes to the CWS, and gets a big fat extension with a prohibitive two way buyout. Unlike ClemTigeralumm07117 who doesn't go to games, I'll be there. But I think it was a high risk low reward hire. I can believe that and hope to be wrong. We don't have to be DerpRoberts who refuses to ever express even the slightest negative sentiment.

Re: Larry Williams tweet about Monte....

Mar 9, 2016, 3:38 PM

3) Clemson has demonstrated that it is not investing in sports

So we didnt just get done spending money at BTF, Riggs, and LJ (in progress).

Re: Larry Williams tweet about Monte....

Mar 9, 2016, 4:07 PM

Your rationals about BTF are purely emotional. Even with the latest improvements we lag far behind the conference leaders in baseball spending. I actually went into this in some great detail last year but you don't read or care about facts so there is absolutely no point compiling it again.

Basketball you can't even be serious. Even with the most recent investments if you amortize total basketball spending over any 10 year span of time I guarantee you we're in the bottom half of the conference.

Soccer - I honestly don't know and already acknowledged Noonan was a great hire somewhere in this thread.

women's basketball - really?

Volleyball - also really?

ACC sponsored sports that we don't even bother: Fencing, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Softball, Swimming & Diving (M), and Wrestling.

It doesn't scream an AD committed to success across the sports spectrum.

We did this over and over last year. Someone with ties to Clemson would have been nice or someone who had been to Omaha. I didn't like the way Leggett was handled and I thought it should have been an indisputable home run if they were gonna do it. That didn't happen. I hope he can get it done and when he does that we are willing to do whatever it takes to hold onto him. I have my doubts - about all of those scenarios. That is all. That's all I've ever expressed. Unfortunately we're not supposed to express anything other than unwavering support for grown men being paid absurd sums of money. You'll never catch me crack on a player - ever.

I have been following Clemson baseball for 30 years.
Have been to 100s of games and the last 3 years was not Clemson baseball.
It's early and a lot can happen but I'm excited again.
So we shall see

I've been watching it for over 20 and have followed the team to two CWS. I think our fanbase played a tangible role in the turn things took. It got really unpleasant to take my kids to games and really reached a boiling point with the language directed at both coaches and players in the stands last season. It had reached a point where a change was inevitable but I think we were complicit in those problems.

Most people have no problem with others who express dissent. Difference is you ONLY #####. You ONLY show up after losses and never after wins.

You were no where to be found after we beat the ##### until today.

Not that hard to see when posters are no where around if you are here during the game enjoying wins with other Clemson fans.

Also I am not the only one to recognize that he doesnt post when we win.

It doesn't take a real smart person to know Coach Lee is going to be doing this for a long time.
We are real lucky to get him and that's why Jack was fired.
Jack would still be here if Lee was not available.

Or that he was considered by people out that way as the fallback if a major program coach turned them down and then they got Tracy Smith from Indiana who was viewed as the best target in the nation that year. I'm sure you know for a fact that he was offered the job though.

Re: I'll make this easy...

Mar 9, 2016, 2:48 PM

What are you talking about? First, you hadn't addressed me directly till right now. So get off of your high horse. There was plenty of extremely negative sentiment from a variety of active coaches after Leggett's dismissal. I would have to spend some time to pull up exact quotes from last summer and I see no reason to do that. Tim Corbin and Kevin O'Sullivan were obviously immediately off the table at the point. Based on what became publicly available in interviews and based on the CWS schedule we know that there was no effort to interview any of the head coaches in the CWS last year. We didn't interview McDonnell at Louisville. We resigned ourselves from the get go to an assistant or a mid major coach. And, once again, within those parameters we did pretty good.

with the way Leggett was done, Lee was the only quality...

Mar 9, 2016, 3:01 PM [ in reply to Re: I'll make this easy... ]

candidate out there that was willing to take the job. Leggett had a ton of respect in College Baseball. No proven coach at a big program was going to come after the way Leggett was let go. And none of Leggetts former assistants would consider.

I agree with you viz about the way Leggett was done. But, Lee is a good hire. It's perfectly fine to not like the way Leggett was done. But, at the same time it's ok to acknowledge that at least at this point Lee was a good choice. All though he was most likely the only quality candidate that would consider us.

I think I've acknowledged repeatedly that barring a major program coach with CWS experience or an alumni of prominence he was the best choice. But these folks trying to coronate him king of all baseball after 10 days need to take a chill pill. It sounds exactly like coots squawking about Muschamp to me.

I could easily say it's coot like that 5 straight NIT or less seasons from a basketball coach warrants continued employment. They're awfully proud of the back-to-back NIT banners.

you're not happy but 6 seasons isnt enough to go on so let's go for number 7. Do you honestly think anything will be different. Oh, we've got some transfers. Haven't heard that in the last 6 years. Still sounds awfully cootish.

No its more like the simple fact that he sint going to be fired this year regardless of what I think and coming here after every loss while being no where to be found when we win is a pathetic way to support a team.

Re: with the way Leggett was done, Lee was the only quality...

Mar 9, 2016, 4:36 PM

It's a fundamental difference of opinion. I don't think this board has anything whatsoever to do with "supporting the team." That's what my money and attendance are for. You campaigned vigorously against Leggett and there had to be a reason. I would assume it was to affect sentiment towards the coach. Brownell is gonna be here losing early clunkers to terrible teams every year until sentiment against him reaches critical mass. His 5 game stretch mid season seems to have staved that off another year. But his return next year was by no means assured prior to that. Economically firing him this year or next is a complete wash and risks opening the "new" arena without any sense of excitement.
