Skip Wise is such an incredibly sad story. Did he ever get things turned around?

At the time, (70's) Skip was better than Jordan, although Jordan played in the 80's. The only player I ever saw in the ACC who was better than either was David Thompson in my opinion.

During the recent melt-down and flood of critical remarks and questions regarding Clemson basketball, I've been tempted, myself, to speak of the phenomenon that was Skip Wise. I was in my second year when he first played, and yes, it/he was unbelievable. Unfortunately, he thought so, too, and his tenure in college (and the NBA) was very short lived.... Tree Rollins, one of the best, actually had to develop as a player, but Skip Wise was one of those guys who just "had it", ala Michael Jordan, LeBron James, (and should I say Phill Ford?), etc., - whoever. He was special. Ahhh, although I can't say those were the days, I can say it was a very special time.

The guy looked like he wasn't even trying . He made everyone else on the court look like they were playing in slow motion .

Clemson/Tates didn't get into trouble

with the NCAA because of Skip Wise....and I'm not aware of Dean Smith "turning Clemson in"....Tates got Clemson into hot water because of his recruitment of Moses Malone.....and it was Moses' uncle --a Terps fan--who blew the whistle on us disclosing that the Tater had offered to buy Moses' family a house--or make arrangements to do so......but we weren't the only school hit with probation for the recruitment of Malone---so did Univ of New Mexico and Univ of Maryland....and ironically, Malone never played one second of college ball...he went straight to the pro's

Skip Wise was on the same level as Michael Jordan.

Maybe better. And that is no exaggeration, no hyperbole whatsoever. He was that good in terms of talent and impact. What a waste of talent - downright tragic.

comparisons to a lot of great ACC players....but there are some facts we can take to the bank:
Wise was a freshman the same year as Phil Ford....Wise was the first ACC freshman named 1st String All-ACC. Ford's in the ACC HOF.....easy conclusion to draw there
Part of the unbelievable Wise tragedy (and he's still a legend on the playgrounds of Baltimore) was that the Baltimore Claws of the old ABA lured him away from college with the promise of a $450,000 signing bonus....of which he only saw a very small fraction--less than $10,000 if I remember correctly......the Claws folded soon afterwards and were not included in the merger of the ABA and NBA
and then, there were the years of drug abuse, life in the projects, imprisonment.....a long series of incredibly bad decisions.
For those few of us who were lucky enough to see Skip in a Clemson uniform, after the initial silence of disbelief, all our minds danced with the possibilities of an incandescent basketball future....only to have it all burned to crisp with Wise's departure before the semester was hardly over, NCAA investigation, Locke's firing, and probation......

Just my opinion, of course, but based on watching him for a

full season against some great ACC competition, he was that good. I don't think we needed a bigger sample size to see that, to see how he compared talent-wise to everybody he played against that season. Granted, he didn't have a career's worth of accolades and accomplishments, but he had the goods for sure.

Player Of The Year for all of college basketball in 1978 x 4 (Wooden Award, The Sporting News, National Association of Basketball Coaches, and U.S. Basketball Writers Association), consensus fist team All-American in 77 and 78, second overall pick in the NBA draft, NBA Rookie Of The Year in 1979. Skip was objectively better than him the one year they competed head-to-head.

I made the same comparison to MJ in an earlier reply (above.) I saw the guy play and WOW... is just about all I can say. I hear you, and I agree.
