A fine, fine man was Gary Barnes. RIP.

Gary Barnes was a great person. A Clemson football hall of famer that moved back to Clemson after his NFL career and served as the Clemson municipal judge for 30 years. A lot of Clemson students who got into trouble had to face Judge Barnes who offered advice and fairness to many. He was a fine Christian gentleman who would work out at a local gym with fellow Clemson legend, Harold Olson, up until his health problems made it impossible about a year ago.

A little known fact about the NFL career of Gary Barnes...he caught the first touchdown pass in Atlanta Falcons history in 1966, their inaugural season.

Gary will be missed by many. God bless his family and friends.

I was only 8 years old when Barnes began his time at Clemson. But, I sure did like him on the other end of Harvey White’s passes. Those teams of 1958-1964 were some of my favorites. I remember buying Vince Lombardi’s book RUN TO DAYLIGHT because he mentioned Gary in it. We’ve all been very fortunate for so many wonderful football players at Clemson, but even blessed to have great gentlemen like Gary Barnes. May God continue to bless Gary and all of his family.
