My slow day proposal for the ACCC game. If the second place

Feb 20, 2013, 10:41 AM

team in the Costal Division has two more conference wins than the first place team in the Atlantic Division (or vice versa)...then the top two teams in that Division play for the ACCC.

Does a team with one conference loss better represent against a team with three conference losses?

What if the Atlantic Division is just far superior

to the Coastal that year. What if the top three or four teams in the Atlantic are all better than the best team in the coastal. By your reckoning two coastal teams could meet in the ACCCG because the Atlantic teams beat up on each other.

better just to stick with the divisions as already set up***

I think that's what vice versa means

It would have been a Clemson-FSU shootout this year if we had this rule.

The best solution, and I believe the easiest one to implement, would be to realign the divisions and make sure that FSU and Clemson are not in the same one.

I believe college football is cyclical and the coastal teams

will bounce back. Remember we weren't that good when all this division stuff started.

or BC, they have been to just as many***

This is why that doesn't work.

Obviously years like last year it made some sense, but making policy based on that has one major damaging effect. It will all but devalue the regular season for the other division in years like last year. Same as the SEC West situation of 2011 when it was clear the two best teams were that side. What are teams playing for on the other side? UGA and USuC's games down the stretch of 2011 would have been meaningless in terms of the conference race. Likewise, GT's games late in 2012 would have been meaningless (as well as Dook's).
College football has made a point of keeping the regular season very meaningful and this is one way of doing just that.
Plus, Clemson and FSU's chances of getting to the BCS together were much better under the scenario from last year than had they gotten to play for the ACC title out of the same division. It would have been an elimination game and only one would have gotten in. Had it not been for the upset in the Big 10 championship (and had Clemson beaten the coots), it would have worked out that both got in. Much lower shot of that happening in the other case. The two bid 2011 was an anomaly set up by the all SEC title game.
Anyway, the playoff setup that is on the way will change this a great deal. It actually should make the title game more important if it gives you an automatic bid to the playoff, which I think it will provided you aren't like Wisconsin from last year.
