Re: Americas Team Dallas Cowboys would have made this game

Jan 18, 2015, 4:33 PM

Here's some food for thought on last week's Dallas-GB game from sports betting and sports fixing expert Brian Tuohy.

"Then came Sunday's "Ice Bowl II" (which was called that simply for marketing purposes). The one play shown above has be already beaten into mashed potatoes in the media, but I'll still add my take for what it's worth.

One: Dez Bryant caught that ball. That is undeniable. It was in his hand(s) and not being bobbled. He had control. The problem lies in the NFL's rule on what actually is a "catch" (note: what is a catch to most people is not what the NFL defines one as being).

Two: The obfuscation of NFL rules is intentional. The official who initially determined this was a catch was standing not six feet away from the play. I'm certain he knows and understands the rules. He called it a catch, but because the league has created an enormous gray area when it comes to its rules, it could be overturned...if the league so desired.

Three: Why does anyone know the name Dean Blandino? Hasn't it always been the notion that good officiating remains anonymous? An unseen entity on the field? This is no longer the case, especially when it comes to the new micro-managed NFL. Every replay, including pivotal ones like this, has the on-the-field official in direct communication with the NFL home office in New York City. Sitting at that control panel is Dean Blandino (the same guy who now has a face in the media explaining why his officials always make the right call - be it on the field or in reviews - without much question coming from our watchdog media). Why can't fans watching at home hear the conversation between these two entities? What's so secret? They should be merely discussing the rule book. Why isn't it part of the broadcast? Then it would all be above the board and beyond reproach.

Four: If we could hear the field-to-NYC discussion, we wouldn't need a guy like Mike Pereira telling us the wrong thing. That's right. The former VP of Officiating (the pre-Dean Blandino), Pereira was actually involved in creating this "in the process" rule. A rule he failed to explain correctly to a clearly pissed off Howie Long on the FOX postgame show. Could it be that Pereira took the officials side of things this week in order to calm a brewing storm after helping stir the pot after the Cowboys benefited from poor officiating in the Wildcard round?

Five: Let's face it. If the Cowboys won the game in part because this was ruled a completed pass, the NFL "conspiracy theorists" (that is, people like me) would be popping out of their holes like groundhogs on February 2nd screaming "Fix!" So was this non-catch call purposefully made to quiet this growing disenfranchised crowd? Was it made because of "home field advantage?" Was it a little of both? Because if one reads the actual NFL rules on this, it's hard not to call the play anything but a catch.

Six: I have to say I kinda like Boomer Esiason, and not just because he had me on his radio show to promote my book (he also admitted during that interview fixing could occur today). Don't just listen to what he says in this clip. Look at his body language. As a former player, I'm certain he loves the game. And as having served the league both on the field and now off it, he understands how it really operates. This play, this ruling, has him beaten. He knows it was a catch, and he says so. Sure, he backs the NFL's letter of the law as he talks (they still employ him via CBS), but he doesn't believe in it. His hands are tied in the matter, and frankly, I think it bothers him.

The bottom line is when the NFL has to immediately go into damage control, you know something's not right. When Alex Jones calls my house less than 20 minutes after the final gun sounds to ask me to return to his program, something's not right. When Andrew Luck and the Colts beat Peyton "I'm suddenly playing with a torn quad which by rule should've been listed in the injury report but never was" Manning, something's...well, sooner or later the new guard has to take over if the NFL is going to continue to thrive on its QBs. Plus, the NFL couldn't have all four home teams win, could they?"

Jan 18, 2015, 5:51 PM

and I'm kind of mystified what makes a person even become a "hardcore" pro sports fan. Unless you live in a certain city, what connection do you actually have to it?

I have been a season ticket holder for 2 different NFL teams (Panthers the year they played in Clemson, and the Titans when I lived in Nashville), though I have no rooting interest in either any more. I think I still might have a Titans baseball cap in a box somewhere, but that's about it for pro sports gear.

America's Team
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ###### logo.

The term "America's Team" is a nickname in the United States that refers to the Dallas Cowboys. The nickname originated with the team's 1978 highlight film, where the narrator opens with the following introduction:

They appear on television so often that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars. They are the Dallas Cowboys, "America's Team".[1]

The term is recognized and often used by media outlets, including ESPN,[2] Yahoo!,[3] HBO Sports,[4] and Sports Illustrated.[5]

History

Bob Ryan, now Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, coined this for the Cowboys while preparing and editing the team’s 1978 season highlight film.[6] He was quoted as saying:

I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television.............

Re: See this link

Jan 18, 2015, 7:45 PM

http://www.dallascowboys.org/americas-team/

Dallas Cowboys (America’s Team)

Originally nicknamed by the media during the highlight film in 1978, the Dallas Cowboys, also known as America’s Team, stuck. The individual narrating the film, opened with the nickname, and it continues to represent the team today.
History of the Dallas Cowboys as America’s Team

During the opening game of the 1979 season, the announcer for CBS called the Dallas Cowboys by their new nickname, and from that point on, it became part of the team. Fans, announcers, and even team members, used the nickname.

Then coach, Tom Landry, wasn’t thrilled by the new nickname for his team. He felt strongly that the name would push their opponents to play harder. However, as strongly as he felt against the name, he really had no choice. Eventually the name grew on Landry, and he even learned to like it!
Controversy surrounding the nickname of the Dallas Cowboys

The nickname for the Dallas Cowboys did not come without controversy. Even today, teams across the league battle it out to determine who really America’s Team is.

Baseball teams such as the Atlanta Braves and the New York Yankees, and football teams like the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots have all had fans and sports writers suggest that they should be considered America’s Team.

Even the long time successful NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, had people backing them as America’s team, due to their most winning Super Bowl record. However, owner Art Rooney quickly put a stop to that nickname, stating that they were Pittsburgh’s team.

Leading up to Super Bowl XXVII, the Buffalo Bills, attempted to get inside the heads of the Dallas Cowboys, when their coach, Marv Levy, announced they were the new, America’s Team. The Bills uniforms were red, white, and blue, so he felt they should take the nickname. The Cowboys, didn’t buy it, and ended up laughing their way to a 52-17 victory over the Bills.

With the most recent Super Bowl win by the New York Giants, some people believe that the Giants should now be considered America’s Team, due to the fact that they are in a city that is associated with America, and since Dallas hasn’t been to a Super Bowl in years.

Will the Dallas Cowboys always remain American’s Team?

Regardless of what teams come and go, the fact is, the nickname really can’t be assigned to anyone else. The Dallas Cowboys were once and continue to be America’s Team. Whether the team, fans, or other teams like it, the nickname is here to stay.
The controversy will always surround the nickname of the team. Polls will continue to happen each year to see if there is a new “America’s Team”, but the answer will not change.

Once a nickname is assigned, it is pretty difficult to move it to someone else. It just doesn’t feel right.
The Dallas Cowboys have held the nickname, America’s Team, since the 1970’s; to take it away from them and give it to another team wouldn’t stick.
