I sent an email to Ron Morris of the State paper this AM...

Jan 2, 2015, 8:42 PM

For those not familiar with his columns, he was always opposed to a playoff, thought the BCS worked great. Following is our four part exchange. He admitted he now likes the playoff, but wants no part of expanding it.
----------------------------------
Good morning Ron,

I have a serious question for you. You had always argued that a playoff was not needed, that the BCS had worked just fine in selecting the best two teams for the championship game.

So, this year we would have had FSU and Alabama playing for the national championship.

My question is, would you have been ok with that? If so, please explain why.

---------------------------------

Steve,
Actually, according to the final College Football Playoff rankings, we would have had Alabama vs. Oregon for the national championship. Yes, I would have been OK with that. As Florida State proved, it should not have been in the national championship game. Alabama-Ohio State was a one-score difference, meaning there was not a lot of difference between the two.
I enjoyed the playoff games and think it probably is a good thing. That does not mean the BCS did not work perfectly most years, which it did.
Hope that answers your questions.
ron
----------------------------------

Hi Ron,

Thank you for your reply. There is an error in your statement, that this year we would have had Oregon and Alabama in the championship game, because they were one and two in the College Playoff Rankings.

True, they were one-two in the college playoff rankings, but not in the polls and computer composite that was used for the BCS in previous years. With the previous year's system, FSU and Alabama would be playing for the title, and Oregon would have been left out. I think a lot of folks would have been unhappy with that scenario. Maybe you would have been ok with that.

Even using this year's college playoff poll, undefeated FSU would have been left out. As much as I dislike FSU, I could not justify leaving out the undefeated, defending champion.

Hopefully, you will agree, what we have now is much better. Even better will be an eight team playoff. As it is now, at least one conference champion will be subjectively left out, with no chance to prove their worth on the field, as Oregon and Ohio State finally were able to do last night.

On another note, at least the past few days proved what I had suspected all season. There is nothing superior about the SEC west, and they were vastly overrated and over-promoted this year, especially by the ESPN experts. And that favorite phrase of theirs, "SEC speed", can be put to bed.

---------------------------------------

Steve,
Yes, I would agree with all that.
If that is the case about final rankings, then it would have been the rare year when it did not work out the BCS way. That is what I always have said --- the BCS almost always worked. There were years when it didn't.
I am not in favor of a larger playoff. The season is far too long. Too much TV influence. Too many bowls. Too much everything. Four teams seemed to work fine. Stay with it.
(Agree, 100 percent about SEC in general).

Ron doesn't have to play nice anymore. The publisher got fired for trying to make him. That's how it should have been. Football coaches don't get to dictate the news or opinions.

Thanks for sharing. I didn't expect that final answer from Morris.

I liked where he says "almost always worked" right after he was

Jan 2, 2015, 10:00 PM

wrong about who would've been playing this year. He acts like he know the two best teams have "almost always" he played even considering who he thought were the two best teams weren't even the two who would've played. He also said he would've been okay with Alabama playing in it simply because they only lost by one score...to a team playing them 3rd string QB and everyone said was going to get squashed.

He would have been much better off just saying, "yeah, I was wrong". And soon his just right 4 teams will be 8, at least. What an idiot. Always has been. How does a hack like that make a living by writing sports articles?

he wouldn't have provided anyone else. I have emailed Ron three or four times previously, and they published my email in the paper.

i would be okay with Bama vs FSU in a winner takes all national championship

Jan 2, 2015, 10:51 PM

Ohio St. should have to pay for losing to VA Tech.

I get the argument for Oregon, but you can't deny that they would had only have themselves to blame for losing to Arizona.

The new format is okay, but it needs to be improved. The committee should not pick the play off teams until after the bowl season.

Why would the committee not watch the Orange Bowl and Peach Bowl before picking the top four? Make those games count.

Who would be your top four after bowl season. Here is mine:

1 Oregon
2 TCU
3 Ohio St
4 Bama

You might think that Bama has no chance in this group of four, but I think any of these 4 could come out on top.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bama and FSU had no business in the four team field.

Jan 3, 2015, 8:53 AM

Had they played in a 16 team tournament Bama might have made it past the first round but their secondary would have been torched by any team with a passing pulse. Baylor would have scored 75 on Bama and still not gained two yards on the ground.

OSU ain't all that but they matchup better with OU than either FSU or Bama. I can believe that either of the two remaining can be fairly crowned National Champs.

Ohio State lost to a decent VA Tech team . Alabama lost to a decent Ole Miss team .
Cancels out.
