It is. But it is a new layer of sod which was just put down

a week ago. The field sits on a rail system and is rolled out one end of the stadium and grass grows in natural conditions through the week. It's then rolled back in for the game.

After all the big fails, why do they think they can replace the sod one week before the game?
I thought I read they are considering abandoning the real turf for latest artificial tech. It’s pretty expensive to maintain the grass out there in AZ only to have it suck for the big games.

I cringe a little every time it’s announced we are playing there for a playoff game.

Turfgrass major at Clemson here. You can actually sod a field the day before if needed - called ReadyPlay sod. That field is unique to any other and is prone to slipping since the moisture content within the turf is wanting to escape into the atmosphere but with the dome “trapping” that moisture remains on the leaf surface - where the slipping comes from

I think the sod was put down a couple of weeks ago. They used a relatively new hybrid Bermuda, Tacoma 31. I have used it several times in the last few years and I like it, but it’s not the “silver bullet” that the NFL would have you believe. They did overseed it with ryegrass which I can’t really understand, as this grass was grown by West Coast sod and it is plenty warm where it is grown. Maybe they just wanted to make sure that it had the color they wanted.

Out of curiosity I checked the daytime temps in Glendale. The Bermuda would have lost some color without the rye. It’s a little chilly.

You are right …… way too chilly at night …….. had to overseed to keep color …… probably a pretty heavy overseeding.

Probably was. One interesting fact is that Dabo asks for a lighter overseeding of rye. The idea is that he wants more cleat in Bermuda grass rather than rye. I’ve heard a few fans complain about the color of the field in November and there’s a reason due to the not so heavy overseed.

I wasn’t even sure we were overseeding …….. thought we painted when the Bermuda went off color. Ed Manganese, the NFL field guru comes from a baseball background (Atlanta Braves) where games are televised many times a week. Their big concern is keeping the grass plush and green for television. Sports like golf & football, playability is much more important than looks, although every grounds keeper wants a pretty field. Looks like the field for the Super Bowl was all about looks.
