and if this is what is coming for football,basketball,baseball...then I'm out. I am sure the youngsters will love it...but, I don't go fishing just to catch fish. I go fishing to figure out,ON MY OWN, how to catch fish. 30 plus years ago, I stopped bird hunting( for you non bird hunters, that means quail) because there just were not any WILD birds anymore. I went to a preserve the last day I ever hunted, and that just wasn't my cup of tea....But,after watching this guys video, if I am going to go to the lake, the river, wherever, and Alexus, is going to tell me where to point my boat, what lure to select, what retreive to use, AND WHEN TO CAST....well, that just won't cut it. I am guessing there will be old skool tournaments that ban ALL ELECTRONICS whatsoever....

And as far as sports, are the coaches going to be waiting on Alexus to tell them what play, and what personell to use? And then some post game AI generated sportscaster to tell us which AI program had the best day?

The best use of AI I have seen is the ability to provide a summary of key points for giant bills passed by congress. Will be great to know what is in them

... let me offer some sort of counter argument. Note: I am not in your league as an angler. I used to recreational fish, but I don't even do that any longer. However, I do love to watch Major League Fishing live streaming. (Long story about how I got interested, but that is irrelevant.)

Technology is advancing and improving, for sure. The question is just where the line should be drawn. (Golf is going through a similar argument as well. Where should the line be drawn?)

I don't know the answer. I know Randy Blauket is making a living on his youtube channel blasting forward facing sonar. But, he doesn't mind depth finders or side scanners.

Where should the line be drawn?

Here are some advances in technology I have seen in the last 40 years or so.

Foot controlled trolling motors, spot lock, power poles. 40 years ago fishing in windy conditions took a whole lot more skill to control a boat than it does today.

Scented lures. (Berkley max scent better be in your boat if you are fishing for small mouth.)

Just the technological advances in soft plastics have been amazing. (40 years ago the overwhelmingly favorite choice was black/grape. That color was over 50% of the sales in my brother's tackle shop.) Now, Rapala is making millions of dollars off of Crush City soft plastics.

Nobody wants to go back to the days of john boats and cane poles. The question is where to draw the line. I have no idea.

But, I do believe this. Technology can only do so much. All the pros have access to the same technology, but there are 8-10 guys who consistently catch more than everyone else. If Jacob Wheeler, Ott Defoe (who doesn't use FFS nearly as much as the other guys) Alton Jones Jr and Dustin Connell then you ain't winning.

Technology can help. But, it still takes human skill and wisdom to catch a fish. Give me Jacob Wheeler's boat and you take your boat. You'd sill kick my butt.

The FFS argument is a very unique and interesting one… I see both sides of it and like you said there have been some guys very vocal about it. I don’t watch a ton of the MLF events but I watch the BASS all the time and one thing I think they could do moving forward is allowing the FFS and all during practice and then not be allowed to use it come tourney day…I’d actually like to see that across the board. Long term it can’t be good for fisheries and to be honest if you fish these local lake tourneys with 40-50 boats and half have lifescope, you don’t stand a chance. And not everyone has 20 grand extra to throw on their boats to compete. Just my quick observation on that issue and what it’s going to the sport. I miss seeing guys throwing at cover and beating banks and points , not just staring a screen chasing shad and bass all around the lake bc they can see em.

unless the bass just happened to be on my pattern. In a 200 boat tournament, 60 of those guys may be fishing 200 plus days a year. If Van ### only fished 40 or 50 days a year, he couldn't compete with those guys either. I had a couple of buddies back then who got on third shift so they could go straight to the lake when they got off, go home and sleep a few hours, and do it all again the next day (although, they killed their marriages too!) They are semi-professional...AND THEY ARE GOOD!!! I use FFS. But, I am not ready to video fish. You watch these young guys who are starting to dominate....they are gonna have SERIOUS neck problems when they are 65. They NEVER look up. I am watching one right now on Lake Fork....The only time he looks up is when he hooks one, or MOVES. Partner, I want to see the rare EAGLE on Lake Russell, or the Broad River, the otters on the Broad, the gators in the low country, the osprey catching his own supper, the 20 wood ducks I saw on Russell three weeks ago and the 30 hogs I ran up on last Friday...

Very tru and I agree 100% , I’m getting over medical issues and want to get back into badly and will prob start looking for a cheaper setup here this summer, hopefully I can find something used not completely abused for a decent price… but I just miss the little bit of competitive nature in small tourneys and club stuff. I don’t have the time or money to devote to being anywhere near what these guys are. And I say that stuff about livescope and FFS not to bash those guys bc they are perfected the art and they are using it bc they have to to make a living. Ppl think you just throw it on the boat and you go catch fish, def not… but I enjoy watching them and learning things and just wish they hold do away with it on tourney days , at all levels. Bc like I said even the smaller tourneys on these lakes if you don’t have it you better have pre fished and thr conditions not change and get lucky and on those lower levels I don’t think that’s right, it’s about who can afford to fish like that not just fishing.

Now, I use all of the stuff you said, but I decide when to go, where to go, how deep, up the lake or down the lake, topwater, crankbait, spinner bait, jig, jerkbait(sinking or rising, and now the ones that fall BACKWARDS TOWARDS THE FISH....think of it as have just eaten a 20 ounce steak, and then your wife slides a spoonful of peach cobbler with a touch of ice cream on it right at your mouth.....YOU ARE GONNA EAT THAT PIE!!!!LOL),drop shots, twitch baits,SENKOS,hair jigs,etc.etc. MY BOAT, 19 feet long will not hold all of the crap I've got....BUT...I still have to decide. That guys video implys that AI will tell you when, where, what time of the day, what lure, what retrieve,AND EVEN WHEN TO CAST....If the ban FFS, it won't bother me, although I use it now. The main thing I need...is a trolling motor...AND TO MAINTAIN MY BALANCE!! It gets harder all the time to stand up and run a trolling motor...I dread the day when I have to sit down like the old fellas I see on the water draggin a worm.....I will delay that as long as POSSIBLE...

I think the guy is going overboard with what AI can do. If there is one thing that technology is teaching anglers it is that bass don't behave anywhere near the way we used to think they did. Telling me which lure to use won't skip it 40 feet under a dock like Andy Montgomery (Clemson Alum) can. It won't make subtle adjustments in my retrieve or tell me just how hard to twitch the rod.

There is a company out there now, Bass Force, that is on the ground floor, so to speak, of AI. It's an app. You tell it the conditions you are fishing in (date, location, water clarity, depth, structure, etc. and some pro - Edwin Evers, Alton Jones, Skeet Reese, and others - will tell you which lure, including what color, to throw.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing some tourneys with full technology, some with no technology. I hope the guy with Touring Anglers Association gets his tourney next month on Lake Lanier.

I can see where local clubs should have tourneys where no electronics are allowed. (And, the debate is even stronger among crappier anglers.)

Ott Defoe is my favorite angler. He's a river rat who would far prefer to fish on the banks and in currents and holes in a river. But, he's learning that FFS is something he has to get better at. (BTW, he's my pick to win Redcrest this year. Seems to me like Lay Lake is a great place for a river rat.)

It's like golf to me. I was never even close to being good enough to be a pro. But, I enjoyed going to PGA tourneys and walking around with a group. You can't appreciate how good they are until you see them live and in person.

I like watching these guys fish. I know just enough about fishing to know how hard it is to get as good as they are. I'd have a very enjoyable day standing in the back of your boat throwing a spinnerbait catching 1 or 2 bass while watching you catch 15 off the front of your boat and listening to you tell me how you did it.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I mean, If I fished a tournament with Van D%M ( I assume y'all know I am talking about the greatest tournament ever), and I got to fish up front with him, and could use whatever I saw him using, I am going to just say, I can catch as many as KVD does. But, if I go back tomorrow using my own boat, by myself, I may or may not do as well because things change every day. AI may figure it all out for you....But, I sure hope not...

I'll tell you one thing though, as far as using it in sports.....NO WAY AI would have figured Bobby was gonna buy the farm and pull that BLASTED PUNTROOSKIE!!!! NO WAY!!!!!

Way back around 1990 BASS (Ray Scott) started their first 100K tourney. Called it Megabucks. They did it on the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesbgurg, FL. My brother and dad owned a tackle store. Brother did a lot of guiding and local tourneys.

Anyway, this was the era when Larry Nixon and Gary Klein were in a race to see who got to a million dollars first. Roland Martin was the biggest name in the sport at that time. (Thanks to a couple of Megabucks wins Larry won the race to 1M..) KVD was a young guy back then, just getting started. Nobody had ewver heard of him. But, 5 or 6 of the guys - including Larry Nixon, Denny Blauer, wouldsome to my brother's tackle shop in the evening to stock up on bait and just chit chat and unwind. That's where I first heard of KVD. They were talking about "this young kid who's gonna be real good."

I love the every fish counts format. Back when I would recreational fish we would always come back and brag on the number of fish we caught, not what our top 5 weighed.

My brother gave me the link to Edwin Evers honey hole where he won the first Redcrest. Caught 23 fish in 20 minutes (or something like that - more than 1 per minute). If you haven't seen it, you ought to go to youtube and find it. He literally was catching them so fast his hand cramped up on him.

I saw something a week or so ago that listed top 10 all time money leaders in bass fishing. Scott Martin was 9th, I think. The other 9 were all MLF guys.

always wanted to try and get in the boat with him. But, those guys don't have time to go with someone they don't know. They are on the water 250 days a year. I don't know how they stand it...and I love to fish...Still, every now and then I might go 4 or 5 days in a week and I get a little tired of it. Tournament fishing on the scale the pros do it has to be hard on the body.

I guess a typical day would be

4:30 Rise
6:00 On the water
3 to 4 Off the water
4 to 5 Prep boat for next day(During a tournament this means, respool line on all rods. Retie all lures for next day. Organize gear so you can find what you need.Gas up truck and boat. Shower, eat supper, fix sandwiches drinks, etc. for next day...CALL WIFE!!!LOL. Very Important)

6{00 Shower and shave
6:30 Dinner
8:00 Relax, slight exercise maybe
9 to 10 Go to sleep

Fellas, if you have never stood on your feet and run a trolling motor for 8 or nine hours and made 1200 to 1500 casts....you just cannot appreciate what kind of shape you need to be in. Rick Clunn is 75 years old and STILL fishing professionally. And, you ought to see him burn a crank bait ALL DAY. I don't know how he does it.

Watching them use front facing sonar to catch fish a Toledo Bend last week was crazy compared to the depth finder on my boat which resembles a Game Boy screen.

The issue is it’s money driven , much like what we see goin on with college athletics … they are in bed big time with these companies so I doubt it happens until viewing starts going down. Which I believe will happen eventually… it’s not fun to watch anymore and it used to be something regular fisherman could relate with and most can’t relate to 3 16” screens on the front of a boat with livescope and 360.

Heck,as crazy as they are about controlling water rights, they may say no fishing period. They have already cut the flounder season North Carolina to 2 weeks I think. Can you imagine if it was two weeks like the one we just had and the one we have coming...THAT would give you about 7 days to fish. Now,even OLE SPUD would have a hard time getting on the water more than 2 or 3 times in that scenario...

Yea I think it’s a fantastic tool and the other side of the argument is it’s gets guys into the sport and gives success and makes them wanna keep at it, which I get … I def don’t want it banned on public water I would just like to see competition fishing change the rules where it’s maybe only allowed during practice days but it’s not allowed to be used during competition days. That way you still use it to find fish and see how they react but during tournament day you have to use some more instincts and take chances… not just chase em around on a screen.
