Best is the Standard (10k post)

Dec 15, 2022, 11:21 AM

What does that mean?
Delivering your personal best in everything that you do?
Never-ending competition with yourself to deliver your best?
Setting high minimum goals that are most team's stretch goals?

Pretty sure it's all of the above and probably more... Dabo has been talking about the consistency of our program and its very true. We are in the elite class of college football teams. You cant do that without an elite work ethic. Teams like LSU or Auburn may pop up here or there with a generational player and win a championship, but the true elite teams reload year after year...Here is how we fair against some of the best programs over the past 10 years

Alabama
125 wins
10 seasons of 10x wins
3 National Championships
6 SEC championships

Clemson
121 Wins
10 seasons of 10x wins
2 National Championships
7 ACC championships

Ohio State
116 Wins
9 Seasons of 10x wins
1 National Championship
5 Big Ten Championships

Georgia
107 Wins
7 Seasons of 10x Wins
1 National Championship
2 SEC Championships

Oklahoma
103 wins
7 Seasons of 10x wins
0 National Championships
6 Big 12 Championships

We are second only to Alabama in regard to consistent performance over the last decade. Thats insane. We are a long way from the Tommy West/Bowden days of 7 win seasons and going to the potato bowl. Very grateful to have Dabo as a coach and to be around to watch the best era of Clemson Football. Been a fun ride and look forward to seeing how it will continue. Go Tigers!

Do you think that Dabo and the staff gave their "best" over the past three seasons? If so, do you think winning another national championship is probable?

Yes

Dec 15, 2022, 2:48 PM

Last 3 yrs
31 wins
2 ACC championship
1 Playoff appearance

I get we all wanted more, but that's pretty strong coming of the Trevor era

No one is perfect, and Dabo has done an unimaginable job

Dec 15, 2022, 3:41 PM

I don't think anyone is arguing that. We are not going to have a perfect record every season. And 10-2 is an incredible job!

That being said, I do believe Best is the Standard should be stressed when making major decisions for the direction of the program. Hiring unproven coaches for a position or two is always going to be questionable. Hiring or promoting unproven coaches for the majority of your coaching positions is extremely risky... especially when much better candidates were available. The biggest disappointment for me is the promotion of Streeter to OC. When your offense is ranked among the worse in the nation, and dead last in the ACC...that is the time to make changes and go out and hire a top notch OC and maybe other offensive coaches. Not promote from within from a failing offense. Honestly I would have fired Elliot if he had not gotten a job at Virginia. But I definitely was disappointed in that hire. And the offense, though a little better. Still wasn't that good this year. We won ten games mostly by limping by teams and hoping the defense holds on. We did do well against Wake and UNC.... neither of which has a defense that could play at the FCS level. So that's my biggest complaint. And yes, the South Carolina game was a Clemson win that was given away by going away from the run.

Sure. We have the 5th best record in the Power 5

over the last two seasons, 6th overall in the FBS (Cincinnati is a game better out of the AAC), and average the 5th best ranking to date over said span.
