Shipley is our best back

9

Oct 7, 2023, 7:15 PM

Mafah is very close, but Ship has to be the guy you trust 4th and 1 to win the game. Honestly disgusted at the Shipley hate. He is a heeeelll of a player and loves Clemson more than anyone on the team it seems.

That being said, Mafah is very good.

They are both slow. But yes solid backs.

Also, Shipley has average more YPC by almost a yard the last 2 seasons even when in the tough goal line situations more. He is special

He’s better on 1st and 10 than 3rd or 4th and 1.
Or maybe the O-line is. But first and goal from the 1 is not Clemson’s strong suit this year.

Thats a blocking scheme/playcalling issue.

Notice when clemson is running it well there is a player or two pulling. Its harder to do that against stacked boxes and linebackers that come down hill immediately. So they switch to a zone blocking type run play on short yardage and this OL is athletic but not strong or physical(i will scream it for ever strength and conditioning is behind the times)

Good observation.

Notice how Clemson O-linemen are all quite lean (as compared to other O-Line units). They all run well, pull well, and get to the next level well.

In short yardage situations, their lean physiques does not lend itself to raw power.

Think about competitive power lifters. The best are guys with big guts. Extra reserves of energy to support a massive physical effort.

This isn’t to say that we want fat, slow moving super (short distance) power guys instead of the type that we have.

But our short yardage challenges have been exposed.

Re: Shipley is our best back

Oct 7, 2023, 9:38 PM

Not to argue but the extra gut has little to do with “extra energy”. Energy is not easily converted from fat reserves. In fact lipolysis is a time and energy consuming effort the body undergoes and only as a last resort when glycogen is depleted. Power lifters and linemen get an advantage from inertia and mass ratio and being lean is best left to runners and body builders. These guys need some size

I like Shipley, he just needs to grow up

Screaming at your QB like that is a clear sign of immaturity and it needs to stop now.

Year to date Stats and grading for blocking say otherwise. Mafah is better and has just as much will to win as Shipley. Shipley won't play pro, but Mafah probably will.

Facts.

With all due respect, you have no idea what you're talking about. Shipley is around the 7th RB drafted you'll see in every board.

Re: Shipley is our best back

Oct 7, 2023, 8:48 PM

7th round maybe. Scouts won't like his 4.77 in the 40. His saving grace is his ability to catch but he will never be a starter in NFL. Arm tackles and slow with no burst through the line will likely not get him drafted. Ship wins by being hardnosed, determined runner with a little power, not with his juking or top-end speed.

Re: Shipley is our best back

Shipley at worst runs a 4.6 at best a 4.5.

Mafah is probably in that same range.

Re: Shipley is our best back

Oct 7, 2023, 9:24 PM

If he was close to 4.5, he would have housed a few of his 30-50yd runs. DBs and Safeties wouldn't run him down so fast. He will be in the 4.6+ range and is without pads, he is not fast especially for 5'11, 207lb. Mafah will be in similar range but he is 6'1.5 and 230. Mafah has more upside as NFL back if he can catch better.

Re: Shipley is our best back

Oct 7, 2023, 9:32 PM [ in reply to Re: Shipley is our best back ]

Shipley has improved at pass blocking, but is no where close to NFL quality in that respect.

Mafah is far superior at pass pro; he stones blitzing DBs and holds his own with LBs. Mafah’s only apparent weakness is in blitz recognition for identifying the man who he’s supposed to block. Maybe I’m being unfair here, as there is just one missed pass block assignment by Mafah that I can’t get out of my head; the FSU sack-fumble of CK2 that resulted in FSU’s scoop & score.

Both Shipley and Mafah have comparable skills at running the ball. Both have pretty good hands … not great, but pretty good … for catching passes.

Neither are fast enough or shifty enough to be like NFL players, other than as practice squad players. Both are terrific for college, however. I am thrilled that we have both of them.

Shipley is a good college player. He is not NFL quality. Clemson University should be recruiting running backs who have the tools to play on Sunday. He is the James Skalski of running backs.

I don’t think it’s hate it’s just frustrating watching him run off guard and center over and over and getting stuffed at the line. I think everyone loves Shipley but it’s just frustrating watching that and maybe that’s not Ship as much as calling those plays over and over after watching our line create zero push and get stood up over and over or not picking up a free blitzing man. Everything we do looks so slow as far as player speed

waiting on him at the line of scrimmage. Shipley is as good as anybody in the conference and one of the top on the country. You can see what he does when given just a little room. I don’t understand the Shipley hate. He could calm down a little bit that just his personality. Also he is not slow. I sure don’t get that one. I’ll never understand why both people on here and also announcers say things like “he’s not playing well” when it’s obvious often there is no blocking. Today when he started getting off those good runs, they had given him a little room to work with. So there.

I miss Travis, who kept his mouth shut and just played football. He didn’t worry about touches or get in Trevor’s or the coaches face when things weren’t going his way. He’s the gold standard for a Clemson running back.

Re: Shipley better w. Ball security

Oct 7, 2023, 9:38 PM

My only issue with Mafah is with ball security. Still only Carrie’s the ball in one arm when absurebtackler descends upon him. There was a late game near helmet p-on-ball tackle on Mafah late in our 4th Quarter scoring drive. Nearly had a heart attack because Mafah would have fumbled had the WF defender’s helmet actually hit the ball.
