but I have lost interest. I have spent less money and time on it... and this latest round of disorganized, unhinged, money-chasing (far worse than NFL contracts) has further decreased my interest in it.

And to be clear.... it's not the fact players are making money. Players have deserved some form of compensation for a LONG time. But this current transfer portal + unhinged player tampering scheme is far worse than anything in professional sports.

I kinda thought this moment would eventually come. The essence of the thing I cared about doesn't actually exist anymore. The logo is there. The stadium is there. The campus is there. But the arrangement that constituted college football is no more. Clemson is kinda still existing in the middle of this madness. So it's not Clemson's program that I am critical of. It's just the atmosphere that Clemson is trying to adapt in and compete with.... is something I don't even want Clemson to do.

It's no longer student-athletes representing their (our) institutions. It's athletic departments chasing a money tornado by throwing tons of money, in disorganized fashion, at kids.

Recruiting has changed. It has been cheapened and simplified. Recruiting is no longer "college" football. Roster management is no longer "college" football. Our players are not fellow alums as much as they are contract employees. But it's worse than that. There is no contract. It's a whirlwind. There is more continuity in the NFL at this point.

For all the people that enjoy this.... that's great for you. I'm not suggesting my values are better at all. But I liked college football and I didn't care about the NFL for these intangible reasons. And those are gone. College football is much worse than the NFL now because contracts in the NFL are not wild. The current system in college football is madness.

FCS football is still college football. The portion of FBS that gets "left out" of the new NFL Jr. CashMoney league will still be college football. Just as college teams, despite having inferior talent to the NFL, interested me far more than NFL teams.... now FCS will be more compelling to me than the BIG 10/SEC Superleague. Though it will never be as amazing as big-time college football before it was finally killed.

And the only way to "fix" the madness of big-time college football, at this point, is just make it more like the NFL.... which defeats the whole point of having big-time college football. If it's exactly like the NFL, it's worse than the NFL. The end result is you basically killed college football and replaced it with an inferior NFL. And what is the point of that? Why would a Clemson alum care about a bunch of non-Clemson alums playing football? Because the logo? What are we fans of exactly? I am a fan of Clemson university. Our culture. Our history. Our shared experience as Clemson men and women. All of it.

Wish I could like this more. Perfectly sums up my steady decline over the last few years. It wasn’t just the level of play on the field, it was the gutting of nearly everything I have loved about COLLEGE football.

That guess would be incorrect. No minor league football league has been successful. The reason it hasn’t is because no one is interested in a watered down, less talented version of the highest professional level. College football has not only survived, but thrived because it offers a uniquely different product, even though it is the same sport. The bands, student sections, and historic stadiums all play a part, but the greatest difference maker is that many of the fans are directly connected to the university in some way. Many of the people on this board either attended Clemson or have a close relative who did. We attended classes in some of the same buildings as our student athletes, studied in the same libraries, were taught by some of the same professors, and now through donations, directly fund the scholarships of these players. We have a connection to these players that isn’t available at the professional level. The moment you remove that is the moment you begin to take away what makes college athletics special.

Before NIL and the unlimited transfer portal, there was always a sense that the athletes CHOSE to go to Clemson. Not because of money or advertising contracts but because that is where they wanted to attend school and play sports. Now that it has only become about chasing NIL, college football is becoming just a less talented version of the NFL

…has been following former Clemson players. With the lack of program loyalty that is unfolding, I will no longer feel any connection to the NFL and stop watching the little games that I do currently.

If the trend continues and expands, I will also lose interest in following our program because part of the appeal is following the growth and development of a group of young men that fell in love with something I also have - the environment of Clemson University.

Right on the money. It’s all about the corruption and greed that destroyed a sport so many really enjoyed. I saw it coming because I posted about 3 or 4 years ago that outside forces would be what would knock Clemson out of the CFP’s. It would be greed and corruption that would destroy what many once knew as college football.

If I were Dabo I would take my money and get the he$$ out of this chaos. He is unappreciated so why deal with fans who have little knowledge about what he does each day to get Clemson back on Top. Unfortunately, schools like Bama, OSU and Michigan and a few other schools will do everything they can to keep us out.

He’s CLOSE to where Clemson has been. Not quite the longevity yet. Georgia fans would be saying the EXACT same thing if they took a dip like Clemson has. They may be saying the same exact thing Sunday because I’m not convinced Bama won’t get that ### tommorow.

The only difference with me is that I started watching NFL bc the Jags are fun to watch. I actually enjoy it more than BCS, because at least they are honest in their intentions - gimme da money. I swore them off years ago, but came back.
FCS is where the guys that love to play the game are and I enjoy that too.
I used to watch parts of 15+ BCS games on DVR, but I rarely watch more than Clemson and whatever marquee game is on. I never watch a minute of pre-game blather.
I believe that today’s high school stars have been so pampered, that they never fully develop any character. It’s a hip hop world. They spend so much time playing dress up, that they’d rather preen than practice. They have very short attention spans.
I agree that it is what it is and is unlikely to change.
But as the NFL minor league, money will dictate everything moving forward.
Who really thought that Clemson Fans would want to toss Dabo? Absolute insanity…

"chasing a money tornado"... let's archive this rant and look back on it as a pretty good real-time assessment "the way we were", with maybe even a little Streisand tones thrown in. Nice job, sums it up pretty well my friend. It's we humans all, of course, that create our course, just like the oil consumption thing. So then we are left to our own devices, since we "know best". But, the "messier the mess, the more interesting the grace" I guess.

I’ve lost interest as well. I still watch the games, probably always will, but I don’t think the current trajectory with NIL + portal is sustainable. Not to mention I can relate an anecdote that the current system may have significant repercussions.

I’ve got a good friend who is from old money & has been a significant IPTAY donor (5 figures/year) for decades. He has had 50 yard line lower level seats close to the field for decades & parked in the shadow of the stadium. Don’t know how many IPTAY points he has but it’s got to be at least 5 figures as well. He no longer attends the games due to the NIL/transfer portal situation. This is a guy who has been to most home games his entire life until 2020 - he hasn’t been in Death Valley since.

He still donates, but he sells the tickets/parking pass and he says he doesn’t see the point in continuing his IPTAY membership - with all the NIL money coming in he thinks he should just donate his money elsewhere as he doesn’t feel like his donations make a difference anymore. He’s hoping this is just a trend that’s going to blow over so he hasn’t given up his IPTAY just yet. However, when significant donors like this guy are talking about bailing, that should sound a warning. I can’t imagine he’s the only donor who feels like this.

I agree that college football is really gone, over the top, mad.

I have not watched more than a few highlights of any other teams this season after only a few last season. Football just isn't as interesting to me but all that's not about the portal/NIL situation.

Most of it is about the aftermath of having a generational quarterback like Trevor. You'd expect a hangover from such talent all over the field and I expected to be disappointed in the next quarterback behind him.

With that and the frenzy created by the likes of Jimbo and Neon Deon in simply going out and buying talent other than recruiting talented underdeveloped players, building their skills and bodies toward making successful men on the field and off is what's caused me concern.

As far as Clemson. Our program is the shinning beacon of hope for those who hate the likes of those two mentioned above who think it's open season on every kid across the land and all it takes to hit the bullseye is a deep pocket.

These players deserve an income, at least to share the wealth college football generates. The courts have said so and I've been on that side of the fence for decades since I saw some of our basketball players of the 1980 having nothing to wear but that which was allowed by the NCAA to give them.

Clemson has now brought all NIL contract under the umbrella. That unbrella is one of right doings. It's not a pay them to play organization. It's to control the conditions and details of NIL contracts, moneys given and see that those who want to come to Clemson are getting no more, or less, than fair to their talent, skill levels and abilities.

It's like herding redworms but Clemson is taken the challenge to do this right. I am hopeful that the 110% program will protect players, our sports programs and the integrity of our, Clemson, University.

Don't lost heart.
