How much profit do companies make each year from unused gift cards? This must be smartest scam they ever devised.

I've loaded two prepaid Visa gift cards to Amazon that I received as gifts. Then threw out the Visa cards. However when trying to now use those cards that Amazon accepted, I need to re-verify the card #. Which is impossible as they've been trashed months ago.

So that's over $200 wasted. Plus countless other gift cards that family members have lost over time. Or food gift cards that had a small remaining balance that was thrown out. Plus $100 in PDQ gift cards that are now useless as the locations in SC are kaput.

Kids need to go back to asking for cash for Christmas. No more gift cards!

From what I understand, it is actually quite a bit, and very well known tactic in their business plan(s).

My wife has a whole bin full and when I ask why we don’t use them she said she likes to save them… like ###. So for April I said if we go out to eat we have to use a gift card and got rid of some at least.
