The Clemson BBall Coaching Wall of Fame

Jan 20, 2017, 4:32 PM

Cliff Ellis effectively cheated (a la Joe Morrison);

Rick Barnes and Oliver Purnell got tired and left

because of being at a football school AND

playing the ultra-difficult ACC conference schedule (essentially Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier in the SEC);

Bill Foster was much better as a program builder than a sustainer (much like Paul Dietzel);

and Tates Locke was essentially a mad, mad man with too little talent in a tough position (think Will Muschamp).

There - all you need to know about Clemson BBall coaching

and how it sizes up about equal to Gamecock Football.

The simple fact is that Brad is doing what can be done

in BBall world where brand is everything these days.

Brad likely won't change that - but Zion Williamson could....

I don't understand the consistent narrative about Purnell

I thought his indiscretion was pretty well known among the fan base, as was the ultimatum that led to his departure.

According to what I'm reading on TigerNet, he was a great coach and we sorely miss him.

he had his pluses and minuses, but he could've stayed

Jan 20, 2017, 6:06 PM

albeit with some change. Certainly he left us in a lurch when it happened.

Those on here who remember only his good points

wouldn't last 10 minutes in running their own program -

all mouth and no hair.

What you actually read was that whatever quality of coach

Jan 20, 2017, 6:34 PM [ in reply to Re: I don't understand the consistent narrative about Purnell ]

he was, the FACTS remain that he had 3 straight NIT appearances followed by 4 NCAA tournament appearances, 2 victories in the ACC Tournament in one season, one being a 30 point asswhipping over BC, one being a thrilling victocry over #9 Duke, and a trip to the ACC Championship game where we lost to #1 UNC by 5 points. How many times has that happened at Clemson.

Clemson basketball fan would love to see a similar performance from the current staff, but alas, we have not come anywhere close.

You may also want to consider how silly you look downplaying OP's accomplishments while defending the current coach when you consider those facts.

AFter 7 years of less than mediocrity, it's long past time for the excuses to stop and the results to start showing up.

It would also great if you guys could stop obfuscating by attacking OP and anyone who has an opinion different from yours and tell us what you have seen from the current staff that you would point to as a sign that we are on the right track.

don't you agree that Zion Williamson would be the right

Jan 20, 2017, 8:07 PM [ in reply to What you actually read was that whatever quality of coach ]

track?

not too many years we get a real chance at the #1 recruit in the country....

but hey, we hate Brownell

so let's through the baby diaper dandy out with the bathwater,

right?

lofl....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What if Zion goes to Duke, you chuckin' BB then?

Jan 20, 2017, 10:26 PM

Or if he stays one year like expected and it's back to mediocrity?

One huge recruit doesn't change a program. Paul Hewitt proved that over and over at Tech his last 4 years there

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just because it's "well known" doesn't mean it's so. I'm not

Jan 20, 2017, 7:00 PM [ in reply to I don't understand the consistent narrative about Purnell ]

saying it's not, but I'd wager that anybody on here that claims to "know" doesn't really know anything.
