late report on Marshall Tucker & Dave Mason in March....

GF couldn't go at the last minute so I took my son. Tickets and hotel at Harrah's were paid for, so not gonna waste. Was not expecting much from Tucker without Caldwell boys, but they did have a couple of the originals, so heard some good stories from back in the day. I appreciated just from a nostalgia standpoint, saw them several times in their prime. They were OK. Dave Mason was great, he only played about 45 minutes, but nailed his songs...
It was a good father-and-son trip. We drove up during that odd late snow on March 12, snowed pretty much the whole way from Gville, which was cool. Damm near blizzard conditions around Waynesville. Gambled in the casino, lost a little money, had a good dinner, cocktails and a couple tokes, etc.
Used this occasion to wear my Dickies overalls, which seemed appropriate for Marshall Tucker. I don't pull them out very often. Go ahead and laugh at the old guy who takes a photo in the mirror instead of a selfie...

Jerry Eubanks and Paul Riddle are still alive but haven't been with the band since the late 80s. Toy, Tommy, and George are gone. Not sure about Franklin Wilkie, who came over from Garfeel Ruff after Tommy passed to play bass. The lineup these days is a bunch of hired guns, although Chris Hicks has been with the band long enough that I would consider him Tuckerized.

The thing is huge. I think it was the rig he used right before they got pretty famous.

of friends. But he's also one of those people that just get #### because they are lucky that way. I used to know the story but it's more of a knew a guy who knew a guy thing. He had some connection to the Caldwell's but through other friends I think.

Is it a Peavey?

For some reason, I had it in my mind that he was a Peavey guy. I know he played a P bass with a really hot upgraded DiMarzio split-coil pickup. It allowed him to get that slight distortion without really overdriving the amp, which was part of his signature tone.

I don't really know...

I haven't laid eyes on it since I was a kid. He used to have it set up in the main room of his house probably 40 years ago, but he's upgraded over the years to better equipment and he keeps that old one in storage. He's got some expensive guitars most of which he never paid any real money for. His main rig is a wide neck fender that he traded for a broken down motorcycle when he got out of the navy. It's the same year and sunburst model that Hendrix bassist used. He's got a newer one with upgraded pickups I think. He had an Alembic that he got from a UPS driver who liked talking to him about music and found it in the unclaimed property warehouse.
He's got a Gibson he hates that he inherited from a high school buddy who collected musical instruments. There are more but I can't keep track of them.
I've been places with him and people will walk up and start introducing him to their families like they have known him their whole life and later I'll ask where he knows them from and he's like, "Oh, we were standing in line behind that guy at the museum two weeks ago."

Yeah, an Alembic would definitely be a prize. And, I share his disdain of Gibson basses. There are a handful of folks that swear by them, but not many. They just aren't great playing instruments. Allen Woody from Gov't Mule is the only real champion of Gibson basses, although a lot of guys like Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, and John Paul Jones used EBs on occasion.
My collection is terribly weak in comparison to your uncle's. My Rickenbacker is by far my most expensive bass and is the one I like to play the least. That said, I'm not buying any vintage for investment as much as I am basses that are fun to play. These days, the quality of bottom-shelf lines from companies like Fender (Squier) and Music Man (Sterling) are probably better instruments than the top-shelf names of 25-30 years ago. Secondary market value on a lot of limited releases of Squiers for instance has jumped 300-500% over retail for some models. And conversely, some of those really sought-after vintage necks are just uncomfortable to play so they better look good on the wall and rise in value, LOL.
And then there are the boutique brands like Reverend, which is at the top of my bucket list right. Maybe I need to seek out a bass buyers anonymous group...

I’ll do it. Y’all would hit it off. His collection is literally all stuff that he lucked or connected into. He can’t read music, but once spent an evening playing standup bass with a jazz trio at underground Atlanta because they asked if anyone could fill in for their guy who got sick. He’s an interesting guy. He’s been a hero to me since I was a kid.

tone. His style was really percussive, played with his thumb (like Toy did on the guitar). Every bass that has followed him in the band has been good, but that tone just can't be replicated.

good show and of course have very capable musicians who emulate the old Tucker sound pretty well. I'm probably judging them a little too harshly, spoiled by seeing them back in the day. I still sang along to every tune and enjoyed it.
