Malcolm Nance on Bill Maher last week

He appeared as a guest. He's a career Navy vet, an intelligence and national security expert, and just spent time fighting alongside the Ukrainian troops at the age of 60. Anyway, he had two interesting things to say in the interview.
1. The balloon incident tells him some things about China. It tells him that they have lost faith in their satellite tech if they're having to resort to such tactics, and that their tech is probably outdated. He also said now that we shot one down, we intercepted the uplink signal and we can tell just how good or bad China is at this. Either way, all around, it's bad for China.
2. He had to pore through a lot of Russian state-run TV as part of the intelligence assistance in Ukraine. He said on the regular, they would run clips of Tucker Carlson's show because they considered it so pro-Russian, it was good propaganda for the people. One commentator even slammed all Americans but gave an exception to Tucker.

The China content makes a ton of sense. If they're in a spot where floating a balloon over the US is their current level of surveillance tech, then they're a whole lot more fucked than we knew.

on a lawn since the early '90s. If the Chinese can't do that, that means, as Nance said, their satellite tech is probably stuck in the '80s. It's pretty laughable that people think we're suddenly tactically vulnerable to China because of a balloon.
Tucker/Trump/FOX/MAGA/Qanon are very curiously cozy with Russia and Putin, under the guise of "well, Ukraine is corrupt too!" The fact that this doesn't bother you, knowing what you know about Putin, says a LOT.

Not true on the satellite resolution. What you are suggesting is mm-level resolution from space. It is good, but not that good. Atmospheric interference is a big deal when trying to get high resolution imagery. Even with multiple image reconstruction, can't read a newspaper from space.
"They have an imaging resolution of 5-6 inches, which means they can see something 5 inches or larger on the ground. These satellites probably can't read your house number, but they can tell whether there is a bike parked in your driveway."

I’m not sure the Chinese using a balloon says anything about their technology. This thing was lower altitude and could gather better pictures and more comms. According to our own people we didn’t know about previous ones or did nothing about them and are now having to change our radar and other notification techniques. So who’s got the bad tech?
You'll pardon me if I punt this one to a U.S. intelligence expert and a 20-year Navy man.
As far as Tucker, he is likely the only person on a major news network opposing a lot of what Biden has done. The others are busy worshiping Dark Brandon while also giving a pass to his son’s laptop, the classified docs, and balloongate. He is over the top sometimes but he has also pointed out a lot of factual events that the others just haven’t.
The point is that Tucker is absurdly pro-Russia, he's making his viewers think that way, and Russia uses him for state-run propaganda. That's enough to avoid watching his garbage.
EDIT: LOL, sorry, I missed this ridiculous comment:
Also I’ve actually been to Russia. Have you?
Oh good Lawd. That doesn't give you any qualifications on anything regarding Russia except maybe some restaurant and lodging recommendations.

How about do this. Go back and watch his interview, read his work, and come back and tell me if you still think he's insane.
But I guess you know a lot more about Russia than him because you went there and took a few classes.
I'm an expert on Ireland because I went there and got #### faced with their people.

The man is dangerous now and the fact he was ever as highly ranked is scary to think about. Dangerous irony for MAGA-types to proclaim they are worried about the leadership in our military when you have guys like Flynn being defended by those same people.

and the fact Flynn is a Christian. If that's all you know about Flynn, please go google (or duck duck go) what he's been up to.
I don't know if he was always as unbalanced as he appears to be now, but not being able to say under oath that he is for the peaceful transfer of power should be a major deal breaker and scare all of us to know how high a level in government he had responsibility.

the Russkies might love me, too. Just my opinion:
- We unnecessarily helped goad the Russians into this - though some of our own people were saying to stop the 'join NATO' nonsense talk.
- We have made an open ended commitment that does not include the requisite definitions of (1) success (2) how success will be pursued or (3) how much it will likely cost. It has escalated incrementally to the point that it is already now one of the most costly wars we have ever fought. The hawks laughed at the idea that this would become a proxy war, but that is now undeniable. Z is asking for F 16s now, for heavens sake, and somebody will give him some eventually.
- This seems to be emotionally motivated, an anti Putin thing. It is therefore also pro Ukrainian, who have been painted as the second coming of Thomas Jefferson. They were, and are, one of the most corrupt regimes out there. Their oligarchs don't like the Russian oligarchs, for the reasons oligarchs don't like each other, and we have chosen sides in that sort of fight.
- Z is willing to kill every Ukrainian and destroy every building in his pursuit. And he might be justified, from his end, in doing that. The way we have helped has simply kept them propped up just enough to keep that slaughter going.
- There is still no end in sight, and no plan to get there, and it is costing us more than we are being told, and more coming, with no apparent end. The news today will be another retelling of how Russian is about to collapse. Yet somehow they keep coming. There is almost no accountability on this.
So, here we are, at the place the hawks said we wouldn't be. Vietnam, Afghanistan all over again, for the same reasons, with the same coming result. Stop it now. If that puts this comment on Russian TV, so be it: my thoughts on this are at least not influenced by what the Russians like or don't like.

Maher’s show: Not the best platform for S&T topics
Feb 13, 2023, 5:45 PM
|
|
Haven’t yet evolved towards checking out Bill Maher and his guests for Science and Technology information. .
It’s a given that B.Maher’s show is primarily entertainment, spiced with politically entertaining topics. S&T … apparently not so much.
Therefore, I’m guessing that some basic nuances about how the ionosphere impacts radio wave communications would not have been helpful for ratings re: Malcolm Nance’s segment on Maher’s show.
Here goes:
The Chinese spy balloons apparently fly at altitudes which, at their very highest, are only at the very lowest levels of the ionosphere.
Satellites, on the other hand, orbit at levels above the ionosphere.
Xxxxxxxxxxx
The following is a simplified overview of why spy devices like the P.R.Chinese balloons can gather information that a satellite cannot gather.
The ionosphere reflects much of radio waves that are generated from the earth back to the earth. Satellites are therefore not optimized for spying on radio wave communications.
Balloons reside at altitudes which are either below or (at the highest) the very lowest levels of the ionosphere.
Therefore, spy balloons can gather some pieces of information that satellites can’t get.
