respect and Vanderbilt should not be left out either. Should we respect Iowa St. because of the Big 12 and Minnesota, Indiana and Purdue because of the B1G? Just like individuals, you earn respect by what YOU do, not the family you are a part of.

Top to bottom, yes they are overrated. Do the bottom teams share the same revenue as the top teams regardless of their athletic production? They sure do! Money runs the show, and the SEC has it.

I don't think the top teams in the SEC are overrated, but the mid-level and lesser teams counted among the ranks of the SEC are.
Let's take a team like Mississippi State for example. They began the year unranked and won their first 7 games, 7-0. They reached #11 in the rankings before losing to Alabama, Texas A&M, and LSU in consecutive weeks. A pretty impressive 3 week schedule right? Right! Mississippi State was a good team that ran into the elite right? WRONG!
Mississippi State beat Arkansas one week after losing to LSU, and then proceeded to lose to Ole Miss!!! Let me repeat that. They lost to OLE MISS!!!
So, if we look closely at State's schedule we will find that during their 7-0 run they beat Jackson St., Auburn, Troy, S. Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, and MTSU, a bunch of nobodies and failures! But remember State's ranking when they played Alabama... #11.
Now, what we end up with is a team whose ranking is artificially inflated by the fact that they are an SEC team. Along comes a real SEC powerhouse and they get killed. In turn, Alabama gets to say that they beat the #11 team in the country since the BCS uses a team's ranking at the time of the game as it's strength determinant, and that ladies and gentlemen is how we end up with 2 SEC teams playing for a NC.
I'm not saying that Alabama or LSU are not legitimate title contenders year in and year out, but I do believe that because the polls hold SEC teams in general so much higher than other conference's schools we end up with a SEC heavy Top 10, when really there are probably some teams on the outside that are more deserving.

Of the year...but how could you have a team with a 7-0 record from a major conference not be ranked...then they lost to three teams they were ranked worse than... So they didn't drop too far because they were not "bad" losses.

Who says top to bottom? A conference's worth should be based on how many good teams they have.
A conference with all mediocre teams and a conference with 5 amazing teams and 5 bad teams are considered equal. But you are much more likely to lose games in the conference with 5 amazing teams and it is also much harder to win that conference championship.
Conferences should be based on the best teams... Not an average of all the teams.

Wrong because college football is based on losses and credit is given even if you don't win your conference it is better to have half your conference be terrible. Just like the SEC 6 this year, if the bottom half of your league is terrible and you don't play outside of that league you will end up in the top 10. Now if you had to play all 5 good teams out of your ten team conference I could see your argument (see Florida), but in the SEC case most only play 1 or 2 of the quality teams.

The top SEC teams are all ranked in the top 10. It is hard for any team to play several top 10 teams in a season.
LSU played USCe, Texas a&m, and Alabama. And they would have played another top 10 team if they made it to the conference championship.
It is like that for all SEC teams.

Miss st. was the exception. How are the lower-tier SEC teams overrated when everybody knows they suck? How often are teams like miss st, vandy, ole miss, etc. ranked? Hardly ever.
So I don't see how you think those teams are always overrated just because they are in the SEC...

Mississippi State #11... and yet they sucked. Everybody knew they were overrated, but yet they were still voted to #11 against Alabama, #15 against A&M, and #21 against LSU.
If you count it up that seems like 3 artificial Top 25 wins for the big 3 in the West. Alabama and A&M got a pretty good boost from those wins. Against State A&M was ranked #16 and then #15 when they played Alabama, and then they jumped 7 spots to #8 after winning in Tuscaloosa, while Alabama only fell to #4. The AP and Coaches Poll's love for the SEC artificially holds up the rankings of the SEC teams.
It's ok if a Lamecock fan doesn't get it. Maybe Michigan will fix that.
