Telling quote from Saban.

You can find the entire story on the football page of espn.com. But here is the telling quote -
******** "I thought we could have a #### of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80 percent of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I'm going to play because they're thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?" Saban recounted. "Our program here was always built on how much value can we create for your future and your personal development, academic success in graduating and developing an NFL career on the field. *******
That's the world coaches live in today. Saban was in a position to say, "I don't want to live in that world. I'm outta here."
Sounding more and more like the NFL dealing with free agents, doesn't it? But, the difference is in the NFL you aren't a free agent every six months like you are in college football today.
I can't help but think if that attitude is ever prevalent at Clemson, Dabo will take the same path as Saban. And, I wouldn't blame him one bit. In fact, if for some unknown reason he asked my opinion, I would say with no hesitation, "Retire. You'll love it."

Sad to lose a legend in the coaching profession like this. Not just a legend, Saban was probably the best ever.

There isn't any proof anywhere that would prove that he wasn't the best ever in college FB!!!

Bret, he retired because he and miss Terry had discussed it and he didn't think he could continue giving 110 and keeping the work hours. It was as simple as that.
While I'm glad he's using his voice and power to state the obvious, it's not why he retired. As I said when it broke, I'll trust miss Terry's words over anything posted or speculated elsewhere.

He, adn Miss Terry, decided they wanted to spend more time with the kids and grandkids. And, I don't blame him one bit. If it were me, I would have retired at least 7 years ago. But, to think that today's culture among the players was not a contributing, majorly, factor is naive.
I can imagine him coming home after talking to his players about next year and telling Terry, "You ain't gonna believe the attitude of so many of them. They are wanting me to assure them they will start next year and are telling me that they are going to see how much NIL money they are gonna get before deciding whether or not to transfer."
And Terry replying, "You've done all you can. You don't have to put up with this. Let's go to Florida and have fun with the grandkids."

Wondering why it is important to you that we believe the current landscape was the primary (majorly) reason he retired? Dude is rich, in his 70s and had nothing left to prove. I am sure the current landscape was a factor but what difference does it make if it was primary or secondary? At the end of the day he was ready for the next chapter and hung up his whistle.

I think Sabin was sharing what he heard and felt at that moment of decision about player priorities. Not what he wanted to deal with down the road.

People (myself included) thought it was surprising when we first heard years ago that Dabo and Saban are good friends.
But it turns out they are a lot more similar than most people realize.

Dabo and Saban have both created special things...Dabo made Clemson a special place where kids from everywhere wanted to come...and where parents wanted their kids to go...Alabama has been such a place for years for different reasons...with portal and NIL Bama changed drastically and quickly with other schools poaching etc. CLEMSON is still on path but many think our days are numbered...maybe so...sure hope Dabo can weather the storm! We who graduated from CCC know the special place in these hills...those only searching for quick money may see something else!

No doubt about it. Always felt that there was definitely a mutual respect between those two. Gene Stallings was definitely a common denominator. If you were Dabo when he was an up and coming new coach who else would you look to program wise to model what you hoped to build.

I understand free agents. But, you cannot have an entire team of free agents

It requires a lot of talking out of both sides of you mouth to satisfy teenagers+ who’s brains won’t be fully formed until they are 23-24 years old.
It’s hard to please all of them for one moment must less 3-4 years…..

Well Coach Saban did his time and I think he is about 72 so he might have been tired or just didn’t have the same energy to keep going.
