Guys, I need some alcohol help. I am siriusly going to

Dec 18, 2022, 11:05 AM

purchase a bottle of bourbon to either make me some hot toddies, or just to sip and knock myself out, hoping for a good nights rest in the midst of this dayum Covid. The fact that I am even considering this tells you how bad it has gotten. I want some reasonable quality stuff.

Please try to keep the liquor politics out of it, and give me your best recommendations. I am looking to spend ~$150 on a bottle, so I know it won't be absolute top shelf, but for that money, I do expect to find some good options, from those of you who are boozer, er, connoisseurs. Hook me up, please, GO.

Dec 18, 2022, 11:06 AM

especially if you are using it as a mixer.

Re: $150 bucks will get you some good bourbon...

Anything you buy at that price will be top shelf. The list is long and there is no “losers” Blanton, Wellers, Eagle Rare, Henry McKenna,Four Roses, BasilHayden and of course Buffalo Trace. All these and many more are less than a hundred bucks. They will be cheaper in North Carolina if you live nearby.

for Jim Beam ought to be just fine.

have a couple of sips of Basil Hayden at a party Friday and it was very good

I have no clue if that’s in your budget

Hope you feel better real soon

Re: I rarely drink liquor (because of how I act) but I did

I bought a bottle of Basil Hayden for about $55. Also recommend Four Roses small batch. Both would be fantastic for this purpose and only spending $50-$60 bucks

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spending $150 on a bottle is overkill IMO

Dec 18, 2022, 11:10 AM

if your only goal is to make hot toddies. Just some simple Jack Daniel’s or Maker’s Mark is more than fine for that purpose.

If you’re wanting something nice to enjoy later when you’re feeling better, that’s a different discussion. You don’t need to use nice stuff for a hot toddy.

So given your $150 budget, I’d spend $30-$40 on your hot toddy liquor and the remaining on a nice bottle of something to drink when you are better.

Fine for a mixer when you’re sick.

And agree also with NyQuil.

If spending $150, save it for when you’re feeling better.

You are absolutely correct. That is one of the best bourbons I own, and I own about 75 bottles.

Same here. I think any type of whiskey

Dec 18, 2022, 1:36 PM

used as a mixer or to kill a cold needs to be mid-shelf at best.

Go get some Papa Pillars rum. It is a great sipper to knock out the bad feelings of a sickness and also makes a good hot rum punch.

For 150 bucks, you could get a bottle of Papa Pilar rum and some Buffalo Trace bourbon.

Could buy a bottle of wild turkey 101, lagavulin 16, and red breast 12 at the class 6 for under 150.

That’s a bourbon, Irish, and scotch. If you don’t like any of those, whiskey ain’t for you.

Dec 18, 2022, 11:36 AM

Small Batch Select. Great for sipping straight (which is the way I like it) - very, very good. If I'm mixing drinks, I wouldn't waste money on anything above bar brand stuff like Jim Beam/Maker's Mark/Evan Williams/Wild Turkey.

I've tasted some higher-end, much more expensive bourbons, but for my unrefined (perhaps) palate, any difference is not worth the $$$. I'm sure some people can detect and enjoy that difference. I'm also sure that a lot of people talk themselves into it.

To each his own - just enjoy - life is short.

First, if you are going to mix it, it would be a waste to spend high $$. Maker's Mark is $20 t0 $25 and is great for mixing and/or sipping neat or with a touch of water added. The various "Honey" bourbons were mentioned, but are too sweet for me. You can mix the honey bourbon 50/50 with the Makers for a more reasonable sipper. Save the money for a top shelf bourbon when you can enjoy it.

If you are going to go that route, you might want to consider a higher proof bourbon. I picked up a 750 ml bottle of Evan Williams bottled in bond (100 proof) earlier this week to use for hot toddies for a little under $20. The 375 ml bottle is about $9.

In my case, I just want to see if it will help get rid of the last little bit of phlegm in my lungs from my eating too much dairy. This bourbon is right up there with many 30-40 dollar bourbons I've had.

Bourbon over $100 is madness.

Try Angel’s Envy, Elijah Craig small batch, Blanton’s, Buffalo Trace, etc

Kentucky has some select batches only sold in that state for very cheap, good stuff from big brands, too bad it’s illegal to get it shipped to SC but if you know someone in Kentucky maybe you could figure out the rest…
