How to Stop Portal Tampering

Shut down the portal, and make schools negotiate between schools on players they want. Both teams have to agree to the transfer of a student. And they can negotiate a price between them. All the NCAA would have to do is put a cap on the amount of money the two schools could pay to transfer a student. This takes tampering out of the picture immediately.

School A contacts school B about a player they would like to have. Then school B goes to the student athlete and ask if they’re interested in being traded, and if so, the two schools work it out. Boom! End of tampering.

Probably makes sense, but these guys are graduating in like 2 1/2 years because they are in school all year, so that opens up a lot of player to transfer.

I understand your point. But the way it's phrased makes it sounds like you're leaving out what the players wants to do. As much as all this sounds like a baseball off-season, it's not. I'm sure that was not your intent.

if the player wants to play in an NCAA sanction league then they should abide

by common sense legislation by that league. Right now its the wild wild west. they shoudl create a code of ethics that deal with transferring and NIL and then have all the schools vote on it. But throwing their hands up and being like "oh well" is going to continue to decay the college game.

You said "NCAA" and "common sense" in the same post?

You should take that comedy routine on the road.

Go back to the old rule. You sit out a year if you have not graduated.

I say Tamper away. Just go back to having to sit out a year if you transfer with exceptions if your coach leaves or is fired.

Schools don't own the rights to players nor should they unless

If a player is found to have negotiated in any way (agent, friend, collective, or coach), prior to formally entering the portal, then the player is ineligible to play for 1 season. Right now most NCAA rules only seek to punish the school or coach. If players are responsible for entering into an agreement to be paid then they can be responsible for the consequences. Currently even if found to have violated the rule, impacts to a school or coach are minimal. The impact on a player would be huge and I would it expect the potential impact would be enough to keep most above board.

That's a great idea, if athletes are employees...

.... of the schools and have unionized and collectively bargained and agreed with that system. Otherwise, it would not survive any legal challenge.

Looks like that's where the colleges are going like an NFL system.

No unions please...... portal rules would control 90% of the chaos. You get 4 years to play, age capped at 23, you sit a year if you transfer, unless coach leaves..... also, no penalty if you are a grad student. Tamper and pay what you will.

Pretty sure this would be illegal. Never going to happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With the SCOTUS NIL decision...

That would be an illegal restraint of trade.

The NCAA would have their hindquarters handed to them again, and maybe have huge civil penalties assessed. That's why they are not touching it.
