How to shake a man's hand

I have been getting frustrated with my job recently, so I decided to test out the job market to see if I could find a job with one of my company's competitors that would pay me more $ with less hassle. I had an interview today and the guy doing the interview was a pretty big dude, probably about 6'3 or 6'4 and pretty broad. He was also a Maryland graduate (I graduated from Clemson, of course) My dad always taught me when you shake a man's hand, to shake with a firm grip and don't go in loose. So I figured, this dude would probably come in pretty strong, so I shook his hand just like my dad taught me. Towards the end of the interview, he asked me if he could give me a few suggestions. I said sure, and the first thing he says is "your hand shake was much too hard." So I was like, well you are a pretty big dude, so I expected you to come in pretty strong, but instead you went in like Zach Dancel for Maryland against Sammy Watkins, and well, we both know how that ended. Link is below in case anyone needs a refresher. I was pretty surprised they invited me back for another interview lol

of having another man make a pass at me. In fact it has happened on multiple occasions and I always take it as a compliment. Just pretty sure this guy was not making a pass at me.

The hand shake is a tricky thing. I always feel like I screw

it up. If I'm prepared for it, I come in too hard. The person catches me off guard sometimes and it can be kind of limp wristed and embarrassing. I almost want to ask for a redo.

If I am shaking with a man under the age of 60

I almost always come in firm. I get told at least once a week at my current job when I shake hands with customers that they admired my hand shake. I had an ex-marine tell me "I knew you were the man I needed to be dealing with as soon as you shook my hand." If it is a woman or an elderly person, that is a different story. Although I am always very impressed any time I shake hands with a female and they have a firm grip. Insta-respect in my book.

a female expects a firm handshake also. There is nothing worse that a handshake from a male that is just wimpy. It leaves a bad first impression. Us ladies can handle it.
Also, a wimpy handshake from another female is just as bad. Just not sincere.

That is also why I will probably respectfully decline the second interview.

A good firm handshake

Is always better than a limp shake that conveys the thought that this person is not even interested enough to make good 1st impression.
I had a fellow refuse to shake hands once because he said it was flu and cold season and his policy was not to shake hands during flu and cold season.

hand sanitizer. That guy needs to learn about it lol. If I went into a business and the representative said that was his policy, I would turn around and walk out.

I've had some handshakes in my life that were so strong...

it felt like eternity, even though it was only a second. Not once have I complained.
However every time I get the limp wrist I walk away feeling like I just left a prostate exam. All loose and mushy...yuck. It's never good.
Always go in strong, never doubt yourself.

a limp, mushy handshake is always a downer, but also when a guy looks down or avoids eye contact during a handshake, that's a real negative too.have a brother-in-law who does that consistently.drives me nuts.needless to say he and I don't get along.tolerate him for family peace's sake.

It was a warm summer afternoon in 1995, when my fiancee and I had gone into the Jervey Football Museum to admire the memorabilia. As we exited, I noticed a Town Car pull up to the sidewalk to let an older gentleman out of the rear passenger side door. As he pulled out his cane and stood up, I immediately recognized him. As I walked down the steps and he came up, I greeted him by name. He returned the pleasantry in his trademarked drawl, extended his hand, then crushed mine, even though I went in firm. That was the one and only time I got to meet Coach Frank Howard. What a memory, something I'll never forget.

The worst is when you go into the handshake with firm intent only to have the other guy start squeezing too early. He ends up with a firm grip on your fingers leaving your palm and thumb exposed with nothing to grasp. So you end up getting your fingers squashed while trying to reach the back of his hand with your outstretched thumb. I haven't found an acceptable solution to this one so I tend to go in hot to try to get my whole hand in there before the other person can clamp down on my fingers.
