I was in Georgetown for Hugo, too. Somehow managed to sleep right through it. Woke up the next day to the horrific aftermath, which taught me to never, ever underestimate the impact of a hurricane.

I just left the beach house in Garden City. I battened down the hatches and pray for the best. We had a complete loss of the old house in this exact spot from Hugo. Well I guess this house is not new anymore built in 1990. My Dad bought the beach front lot in 1958 for 7500 dollars. I wish he had bought about 20 lots.

If Matthew loops back it would be like Hazel did in 1954 to S.C. Everybody needs to pay close attention to this storm!
Hugo was bad enough in 1989 and those of us who experienced it understand the warnings. If you live on the coast move inland ASAP!!
God bless and Go Tigers!

It went just north of us. I went with a clran up crew the following weekend to the Charleston area. Most devastating thing I've ever seen.

I was in Junior High (Castle Heights, and was without power for two weeks as well. I had to walk up the street to my friends house to get hot water and take a shower. Really sucked!!

I was the detachment commander of the NG unit(D1A 505th Engineer Bn) in Taylorsville, NC. It`s a small, rural town in the northwestern NC foothills and Hugo strolled thru here with 85mph+ winds. Trashed the place pretty good, most people here were without power for 2-4 weeks. We cleared a few roads of trees, then the state decided people around here could fend for themselves so they sent us to Charlotte. At least we ate good there(the locals would feed us as we came thru their neighborhoods) and all the topless joints offered free admission and cheap beer on a military ID, lol
A good friend of mine, Clemson grad too, rode it out in a school gymnasium in Moncks Corner with his SCARNG unit. The roof started to lift and set down about midnight. At 1 am the emergency services director came to him and said "Moncks Corner is yours". It was 2 weeks before he got to go begin to get his own home straightened out, and that was only for 2 days then back to duty.

Was in the upstate as a Clemson student and seriously worried about my In-laws in Moncks Corner. Took us quite a while to find 'em buried in the mess Hugo brought. All safe and sound! Will arrive in the midlands tomorrow to avoid the worries...

fled to Clemson for the night, and made the mistake of going back the next day. Total destruction. The place was barely recognizable. The people I came across in my apt complex looked like zombies, most said they would NEVER stay again.
All power out, no gasoline, so I was stuck there. Ate red cross meals for two days before some friends in St Stephen cut their way out of the woods and came to get me. People everywhere in town came together, it was the only nice part of a really terrible time.
Massive mile long burn pile in the median of the mark clark burned downed trees for about 6 months. You really got tired of seeing stuff that was torn up.
Major hurricanes really suck; may God be with all those in harms way!

Not to downplay this storm, but you are correct @camcgee. Hugo made a direct landfall just north of Charleston as a category 4 storm and it was devastating. This storm is not forecasted to make landfall and should skirt the coastline as a category 1 storm. The largest concern for SC at this time is the expected rainfall totals that are predicted. It's being compared to last year's thousand year flood.
I'm staying in Charleston but have certainly made some important preparations since the town has all but shut down. Just hoping the power stays on.

I'm very scared of this hurricane. I can remember in '89 when Hugo hit, we hid our kids under mattresses. One of them suffocated, but this isn't the place for sad stories. I hope everyone makes it through this unscathed.

Hazel was the year I was born. I do remember Gracie, in 1959(?), it downed a huge pine tree right onto a '50 Ford that was parked next to our house. Squashed it down to about a foot high right through the middle of it. Being only 5 years old, I thought the high winds were cool to play in, until my Mom told me she was going to massage my backside with a belt if I didn't get inside!

the snapped off pine forest on Highway 15 between I-26 and Holly Hill.
Also, my Dad was 71 at the time, and he remembered a pecan orchard that he and his dad had planted when he was 10, on our place. Yep, Hugo did away with every single one of those 61 year old trees. It was a sad time in SC.

I was a junior in high school. I remember coming home that Thursday after our walk through still thinking we would play football the next day. Little did I know the disaster that would follow. I remember cleaning up in the yard and people riding by with bags of ice in the back of the truck passing them out to people in my community. We went 2 plus weeks without electricity.
We were not good at that point in the year. After the storm we used the two weeks plus off to practice. That was actually a welcome distraction for a couple hours just about everyday. A second "fall" camp helped turn us into a pretty decent football team. We ended up winning our region.
