Hoopsters - diff between a Nike and Wilson basketball?

Jan 29, 2013, 8:40 AM

anybody understand this?

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20130129/PC20/130129254/1032/there-s-no-place-like-home-court-for-clemson-s-milton-jennings

(Milton) Jennings said there is something else that might explain the home-road curiosity: the ball. The 6-9 senior said he’s only comfortable shooting Nike brand basketballs, the type Clemson uses.

“I don’t like shooting with Wilson,” Jennings said. “I just pretty much like the Nike ball.”

Funny you ask. My son insisted on a new Nike Elite

Jan 29, 2013, 8:48 AM

basketball for Christmas. He said no Wilson and definately no Spalding. He says that all the guys he plays with like the Nike Elite better than the other balls.

So I went to the store and checked them out. Honestly, I could not see or feel much diferemce. The Wilson had maybe a little more grip.

If I'm Coach Brownell, I'm giving Milton Jennings a Wilson basketball and telling him he'd better get used to it. As a basketball player, your JOB is to shoot THE basketball. Doesn't matter if it is Nike, Wilson, Reebok, Spalding, etc. learn to shoot THE BALL.

Does he not like rebounding a different ball?

Jan 29, 2013, 9:01 AM

Is home average is 6.7 rebounds/game and his road/neutral site average is 5.7.

This is odd. I buy both Nike and Wilson Solutions. They are both high quality game basketballs. If there is a difference it is with grip. I have bought every kind of basketball. Good shooters can put anything in the hoop.

Now...if we are deflating the balls just a tad that can make a difference. Softer on the rim and more good bounces. Other than that an indoor game basketball is just like any other

I can understand the feel of the ball and the preference but

Jan 29, 2013, 9:20 AM

for it to have that big of an impact on your game---I cannot understand. The nba doesn't use Nike so he better enjoy the rest of the season.

Im not exactly sure which is which, but I know

some balls have different textures (some with better grip) or deeper ridges where the black lines are

I dunno about Nike, but I always preferred Spalding over Wilson.

Also my experience back in the day - much preferred Spalding

to Wilson. I had hung up my Converse All-Stars well before Nike started making basketballs....
