Hoops question
May 26, 2012, 5:49 PM
|

I know you guys are more of a football school and prefer it over hoops, particularly since in the ACC if you aren't Duke or UNC you are probably getting screwed, but how do you guys feel about your hoops team's ability to compete in the Big 12?
** Note: For complete transparency, I will say that fans in the Big 12 from other teams not named Kansas feel that Kansas gets all the calls all the time everywhere. I fully expect, should you guys get to the Big 12, that you will side with your fellow conference brethren and grow to hate KU hoops.

we are the definition of mediocrity in hoops

we play really tough at home, but have a very hard time winning road games (duh). We support the team pretty well despite our blah history and tradition, but it obviously is a distant 2nd to football. We've put a fair amount of players in the NBA, oddly mostly big men like Horace Grant, Elden Campbell, Dale Davis, Tree Rollins, and Larry Nance.
We always seem to be a borderline NCAA/NIT team almost every year.
We went to the NCAA Tourney 4 years in a row until this past season. Coach Brad Brownell will be in his 3rd season this year, and we love his tenacity. We'll put up a fight - rarely do we win, but rarely do we get blown out of the gym.

compete now and then.
Obviously Kansas is a national power, but we were dealing with UNC and Duke, and now Syracuse, and in recent memory Maryland won a national title, GT made the title game, and WF went through a period of being a very strong team. NC St also has multiple national titles going back a couple decades.
Texas has done well with Barnes (not gonna discuss that now......), I'm not sold Baylor has staying power...I believe the Oklahoma schools have done well.
But obivously ACC was king in BBall for a long time and more recently the Big East has been but losing WV/Syracuse/Pitt changes that equation.
This is clearly a football move.

Oh there is no doubt this was a football move. But I like to think the Big 12 cares about all sports, not just football which is why I was asking about hoops as well. I am aware Clemson and FSU are both strong baseball programs, and the Big 12 does like them some baseball (which seems funny, Big 12 country isn't really known to be big baseball fans). Football is obviously numero uno, but you know, just want to get a gauge on what kind of hoops program you guys had.
Is it true Clemson has never beat UNC at the dean Dome? I think I heard that once on ESPN, but I cant remember if it was Clemson or not.

ACC officiating by year at the Clem@UNC games. Maybe they have some good documents and films at the ACC offices in the screw Clemson filing cabinet.
Somewhere there should be chapter devoted to the ACC tournament thefts even those are always at "neutral" sites in North Carolina.
Just put a picture of Greg Buckner dunking on the cover.

Clemson's mens basketball has never beat the tarholes in Chapel Hill, period. Even before the Dean Dome.

It's crazy you say that. I was at that game. Its the only game in Allen Fieldhouse I have ever been to and it was two years ago. My wife had got me tickets for my Christmas present.
I should note, I did not attend KU. 90% of my family went to KU, so I was born a Jayhawk. I was saying Rock Chalk Jayhawk when I was 1 and a half years old. I actually attended Rice, but in hindsight I wish I would have just went to KU. In my field, I dont think where you get your degree really matters much, so I kind of wasted my money going to Rice. Rice was great though, dont get me wrong, but I think I would have had a great deal more fun going to a school where I loved the team.

I've had no problem with Kansas basketball since Roy Williams left. I couldn't stand the crybaby when he was there and less use for him now that he's at UNC.

B12 plays basketball?

I can't say I care much about B12 basketball. But I have relatives in Lawrence, Kanssas who are big Jayhawk fans, so I usually pull for KU unless they are playing an ACC team.
Clemson has a fine basketball team. We love our new coach. I think we will be able to compete in either confernce equally well. But I can't say I would look forward to road trips to the midwest for bball.

Clemson basketball tests the heart and resolve of those who follow it. We have sandwiched some memorable seasons around quite a few seasons and coaches better left forgot.
Kansas fans would likely equate Clemson's current style of play with last year's Kansas State team ... except our head coach is a teacher and motivator, not a cult leader. We have been in the top half of the ACC for the past 5-6 years, and of course those with longer memories remember that UT's Rick Barnes left here to take over the Horns.
** Note: For complete transparency, I will say that fans in the Big 12 from other teams not named Kansas feel that Kansas gets all the calls all the time everywhere. I fully expect, should you guys get to the Big 12, that you will side with your fellow conference brethren and grow to hate KU hoops.
Yes we will. But only having one team that gets all the calls is far better to the life we live now.

It'll be tough for us no matter what conf we're in...

we have no history and our state isn't exactly a hotbed of hoops talent. When there is talent, we can recruit a kid for 4 years and think he's ours but if unc or dook lose a prospect to a Kansas or Kentucky, they can come in at the last minute, make the offer, and the SC kid will forget about 4 years of building the relationship and he will go with unc or dook.
sad but true... and I spent 5 years working for Rick Barnes when he was our coach.
Let's put it this way, you won't have to worry about our team year in and year out. Maybe occassionally but ####, it's tough for us.

I think we would hold our own in the Big 12. Our coach is one of the best kept secrets in college basketball. He's arguably with Coach K the best coach in the ACC.
