as well as the rest of the ACC in football. Clemson was in our 26th season under Coach Frank Howard. We were 5-2-0 in the ACC, but only 5-5-0 overall. This, believe it or not, was good enough to be Co-Champions of the ACC along with NC State, who was also 5-2-0 in conference, but 6-4-0 overall. We won the head to head matchup with them, which was one of the few good things you could say about this season.
That game was the opener of the season, with Clemson winning at home 21-7. A close road win over Virginia, 20-14 in Charlottesville followed. This was back in the time when Virginia had NEVER beaten us in football, although they came close in this game. That streak would survive all the way up to the first year of the Ken Hatfield era. Not many liked Hatfield anyway, due to Danny Ford's ouster, and losing the first ever game to the Cavaliers wasn't going to win him any new friends.
But, back to 1965, and once again, here comes Grant Field! A fourth straight road game against Georgia Tech predictably resulted in a 38-6 loss. This was followed by a second consecutive trip to Sanford Stadium to face the Georgia Bulldogs. I say again, who MADE these schedules? The Dawgs took us down as well, winning 23-9.
Clemson not mustering much, or any, offense, but playing some good defense, would result in a couple of baseball scores in the next couple of games. We took a 3-2 (!) win on the road at Duke, and a 3-0 revenge shutout over TCU in Death Valley. An offensive EXPLOSION (for this year) resulted in a third straight win, 26-13 over Wake Forest.
But after that, nothing good happened for the Tigers, as we ended the season on a dismal three game losing streak. The last of these was a totally frustrating 17-16 loss in Columbia to the Capons of South Carolina, in front of 44,500 fans. Clemson leads the series 36-24-3.
