40 years ago, 1982: Michael Jackson's groundbreaking album

Jul 27, 2022, 8:05 AM

“Thriller” was released. The Feds proclaimed that AT&T had an unfair monopoly, and ordered the company to disperse. Thus were created several different companies dubbed “Baby Bellls”. Argentina invades the Falkland Islands / Malvinas., prompting an overwhelming British response. The first episode of “Late Night with David Letterman” debuts on NBC.

“E.T.” phones home for the first time. Down in Florida, Disney's futuristic “Epcot Center” opens for business. The infamous “Tylenol Murderer” kills seven people in Chicago with potassium cyanide laced headache pills. The Viet Nam Veterans Memorial is dedicated in Washington, DC, to mixed reviews. “Just a black wall full of names? What kind of Memorial is that?” Anyone who ever has seen it has the answer for them. I even wrote a letter about it later that turned me into an actual “published in the newspaper” author. More importantly, the attitudes of the country finally began to change, and long overdue acknowledgement of the Supreme Sacrifice so many of our young men had made in far flung Viet Nam began to happen. Members of the Armed Forces should ALWAYS be commended for their service to our country, they are the reason we still HAVE a country.

Clemson won the ACC Championship again in 1982, with a 6-0-0, 9-1-1 record. However, sanctions were handed down near the end of the season due to recruiting violations from the Charley Pell era, and from “hundred dollar handshakes” from boosters that were prevalent at the time. The NCAA sanctions included a two year bowl ban, and a cumulative reduction of 20 scholarships. Coach Ford chose to begin that ban immediately by not competing in a bowl for the 1982 season. The ACC did not like this, wanting the Tigers to suffer two full years of known upcoming misery, So, the ACC tacked on an additional THIRD year of bowl ban. THIS is the reason many people, including myself, despise the ACC to this day.

The National Champion for 1982 via the AP and UPI was the 11-1 Nittany Lions of Penn State. This was their first National Championship under Coach Joe Paterno. They defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 27-23 in the Sugar Bowl to win their Natty.

Speaking of the Georgia Bulldogs, that is who we opened the season with in 1982. In another hard fought, low scoring game, the Bulldogs got revenge for the nine turnover defeat the previous year, by taking down the Tigers 13-7 between the hedges at Sanford Stadium, before a HUGE crowd of 82,122 fans. Georgia had opened the season with a No.7 ranking, and Clemson was at No.11.

Clemson limped home from Athens,, now ranked 16th, only to be tied 17-17 by an unknown Boston College team. They wouldn't be unknown for long, as they had a gutsy, vertically challenged QB by the name of Doug Flutie, who was going to do some amazing things in college football.

I MUST digress here for a moment. That 17-17 BC tie would come up again in a few weeks. In 1982, I was nearing the end of the five years I spent working and living in the Charleston, SC area. I was splitting an apartment with a co-worker who was an all around good egg, with the notable exception that he was a Coot fan. He took us on a road trip up to Columbia a few weeks after that BC tie, to buy some scalped tickets, and see his Coots play in Williams-Brice. I wore my orange Clemson gear, of course, and was treated to all kinds of derision going into the stadium, “BAWAHAHA, Clemson got tied by little old Boston College!” Well, ladies and germs, the Coots opponent that day was the Furman Paladins, who proceeded to PLUCK THE CHICKENS by a score of 28-23. I didn't have to say a word on the way out of the Roach, my ear to ear smile said it all for me. Amazingly, I heard no more about Clemson being tied by little old Boston College. Now, back to the season!

I should have said earlier, our starting QB in 1982 was once again Homer Jordan. Running back Cliff Austin rushed for 1,064 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season. A leading receiver was Frank Magwood, with 414 yards. As you can tell by that, we were by far a predominately run first football team under Coach Ford, this year, and most years.

That BC tie was the first game of a three game home stand in Death Valley. A 21-10 win over Western Carolina didn't generate a lot of buzz, but a 24-6 win over Kentucky in the next game started to build the enthusiasm that the season might yet be something special.

The offense finally got on track the next game, at Virginia, with the Tigers smoking the home standing Cavaliers by a score of 48-0. We had fallen out of the rankings with our slow start, but now crept back in, to stay, at No.20 for our next home game, a 49-14 pasting of Duke in the Valley.

We were bumped up to No.18 in time to take a 38-29 road win over the Wolfpack in Raleigh. Then, we returned home ranked No.13, for what was always a defensive slugfest, against the No.18 Tarheels of North Carolina. This game was no different, as the Tigers ground out a close 16-13 victory. We then took a No.11 ranking on the road to Byrd Stadium in Maryland, and came away with another close win, 24-22.

Clemson was once again a Top Ten team as the No.10 Tigers hosted the Capons in what usually would have been the last regular season game. But, it wasn't, as arrangements had previously been made to later play Wake Forest in what most definitely was a road game for both teams, in Tokyo, Japan. It was to be called The Mirage Bowl. But first, there was the matter of South Carolina to take care of. That was done in workmanlike fashion in the Valley, to the tune of 24-6. Clemson now leads the all time series 47-30-3.

Since the NCAA sanctions had by now been handed down, the Wake Forest game would have to serve as our Bowl game for the 1982 season. It was unexpectedly close, probably due to the doom and gloom which descended over the Clemson program, now looking at a bowl-less three year stretch, thanks to the ACC. But, the Tigers did prevail, 21-17, to end the season ranked at No. 10. All results below.

At No. 7 Georgia No. 11 L 7–13
Boston College No. 16 T 17–17
Western Carolina W 21–10
Kentucky W 24–6
At Virginia W 48–0
Duke No. 20 W 49–14
At NC State No. 18 W 38–29
No. 18 North Carolina No. 13 W 16–13
At No. 18 Maryland No. 11 W 24–22
South Carolina No. 10 W 24–6 (Clemson leads series 47-30-3.)

vs. Wake Forest No. 10
National Stadium
Tokyo, Japan (Mirage Bowl)
W 21–17

The UNC homer/sports broadcaster was so excited to break the news of the investigation and talk about it every chance he got. He kinda acted like a kid. Guess he didn't have much to say when his beloved Tarheels were being investigated, but by then he was too old to act like a kid and probably retired.

I remember the Tuesday before Thanksgiving in '82, I was walking across campus and through the plaza after an early afternoon class watching what was left of the students leaving for the 5 day break. I lived just 5 miles away in Central, so I was hanging around to see a couple of people. Somebody had a radio in the window of their Johnstone dorm turned up full volume for the press conference with prez Bill Atchley about the probation. It was really odd with so few left on campus and the radio so loud and Atchley's voice so monotone and serious almost echoing across the plaza. I bet it was coming from D329 lol.
