35 years ago, 1987: The first “The Simpsons” cartoon short

is shown on The Tracey Ullman Show. The popular television sitcom, “Full House,” debuts on ABC. The Baby "M" Case is the First Case in an American court ruling on the validity of Surrogacy. Mathias Rust, a West German citizen, flies a small Cessna airplane into Moscow, landing in Red Square.
A cross-channel ferry capsizes outside the harbour off Zeebrugge, Belgium, killing 193 passengers and crew. United States President Ronald Reagan delivers his famous “Tear Down This Wall” speech at the Berlin Wall in West Berlin. The US Stock Market Crashes on “Black Monday”, October 19th , 1987 with a 508 point drop, or 22.6% of its value.
Clemson, in its 10th season under Coach Danny Ford, compiled a 6-1-0, 9-2-0 regular season record, to win the ACC Championship. We ended the season with a No.12 AP ranking, and a No.10 UPI ranking. The team's statistical leaders included quarterback Rodney Williams with 1,486 passing yards, Terry Allen with 973 rushing yards, Gary Cooper with 618 receiving yards, and placekicker David Treadwell with 87 points scored (18 field goals, 33 extra points). Michael Dean Perry was a standout on defense.
The unanimous National Champion for 1987 was the undefeated 12-0 Miami Hurricanes of Coach Jimmy Johnson. Miami beat no less than SIX ranked teams during this season, including two whose only loss was to the Hurricanes. The first of those, Florida State, lost 26-25 early in the season, after going for the win and failing on a two point conversion after they had scored a touchdown with 42 seconds left. They would finish the season ranked No.2. The other unbeaten going into bowl season was Miami's opponent in The Orange Bowl, No.1 ranked Oklahoma. Miami won a close game 20-14, and got Jimmy “The Hair” Johnson his first National Championship, after falling just short to Penn State the previous year.
Meanwhile, back In Clemson, SC, a slow start would not be the case this year. The Tigers came out of the gate blistering Western Carolina 43-0 in the valley, and took a No.10 ranking to Lane Stadium, where we prevailed over Virginia Tech 22-10.
Next up, No.18 Georgia came to Death Valley, still smarting from the narrow defeat at the hands of David Treadwell and the Tigers in Athens the previous year. They wouldn't feel any better this time around. Last year, even had Treadwell missed, the game would have ended in a tie. This time around, Treadwell was hustled onto the field, as No.8 Clemson had no timeouts left, and was trailing 20-18.. He connected again, this time with two seconds left, to ###### victory away from the Dawgs, 21-20. “Treadwell” remains a four letter word for Georgia fans to this day.
Georgia Tech visited Death Valley the following week, and the No.9 Tigers sent them back to Atlanta with a 33-12 whipping to remember us by. Back up to No.8, we took care of Virginia at home next, by a score of 38-21. Duke, now under the Head Coaching tutelage of the offensive minded Steve Spurrier, gave us a much closer than expected game in Death Valley, but No.7 Clemson won the game 17-10.
#### Sheridan's NC State Wolfpack came to town next, and downed the No.7 Tigers in a close one, 30-28. Now dropped to No.14, we took it out on Wake Forest in the Valley the next week, 31-17. Then, it was on to North Carolina, for the seemingly annual defensive slugfest. This one was another low scoring affair, with No.10 Clemson ekeing out a 13-10 win. Back to the Valley with a No.9 ranking, Maryland was not a problem, as the Tigers rolled, 45-16.
But then, came something highly unusual. South Carolina, under 5th year Head Coach Joe Morrison, was having a good year of their own. They were 7-2 coming into the Clemson game, and those two losses were close games to No.20 Georgia, and No.2 Nebraska. And, for 1987, Clemson was NOT the last regular season game for the Gamecocks. They still had a later date with No.2 Miami. But first, they had to get by No.8 Clemson in Williams-Brice, to preserve their own No.12 ranking. In what had to be considered at least a mild upset, they did just that, defeating the Tigers 20-7. Clemson now leads the series 49-32-4.
To South Carolina's credit, they would go on the next week and give the eventual National Champion Miami squad all they wanted at home in the Orange Bowl, before falling 20-16. They would end their season with a 30-13 loss to LSU in the Gator Bowl, but still wound up ranked No.15 at seasons end.
Clemson, on the other hand, took our 9-2 record and No.14 ranking into the Citrus Bowl, against Coach Joe Paterno and the No.20 Penn State Nittany Lions. Clemson would totally outclass them, winning in a blowout 35-10. We finished the season at 10-2, ranked No.12 in the AP, No.10 in the UPI. All results below:
Western Carolina W 43–0 At Virginia Tech No. 10 W 22–10 No. 18 Georgia No. 8 W 21–20 Georgia Tech No. 9 W 33–12 Virginia No. 8 W 38–21 Duke No. 7 W 17–10 NC State No. 7 L 28–30 Wake Forest No. 14 W 31–17 At North Carolina No. 10 W 13–10 Maryland No. 9 W 45–16 At No. 12 South Carolina No. 8 L 7–20
January 1, 1988 No. 14 Clemson vs. No. 20 Penn State Citrus Bowl W 35–10
