31 years ago, 1991: President Bush announced that a

ceasefire had been reached in the Gulf War, and declared that Kuwait was free. By the end of 1991, the Soviet Union was dissolved, and 14 countries had declared their independence from the Soviet's hammer and sickle flag. Eastern Air Lines and Pan American World Airways both folded their wings.

Fifty-four tornadoes swept across six Midwestern states in just one day. The Dow topped 3,000 for the first time. The World Wide Web was launched to the public, and Microsoft.com went online. Children’s author Dr. Seuss passed away. The Dollar Tree chain of stores was founded. TV Guide published its 2000th issue, and Bounty paper towels first coined the slogan “the quicker picker-upper.”

The ACC Champions of 1991 were the 6-0-1, 9-2-1 Clemson Tigers. We would finish the season at No.18 in the AP, No.17 in the UPI Poll. The only other ranked team from the ACC at season's end was NC State, at 5-2-0, 9-3-0, losers of a high scoring Peach Bowl in Atlanta vs No.9 East Carolina, 37-34.

Your National Champion for 1991 depended on if you liked East Coast football, or West Coast football. The East Coast (AP) Champions were the 12-0 Miami Hurricanes of Coach Dennis Erickson, who were 22-0 Orange Bowl winners over No.11 Nebraska. The West Coast (UPI) Champions were the 12-0 Washington Huskies of Coach Don James, 34-14 winners of the Rose Bowl over No.4 Michigan.

Someday, somebody would figure out a way to set up Bowl season so that you had a single, unanimous National Champion. But, that was still a ways off in 1991.

We opened the 1991 season at home, with a No.8 ranking. Appalachian State was the opponent, and went down to a 34-0 defeat at the paws of the Tigers. This would be the first of a three game home stand, with the still No.8 Tigers taking down Temple 37-7 in the 2nd game. Then last years split Natty winner, No.19 Georgia Tech came to town, and No.7 Clemson escaped with a 9-7 win in a good, old fashioned defensive Slobberknocker of a game.

Next up, a road trip to Athens, where 3rd year coach Ray Goff had his pooches playing much better football this time around. The Dawgs handled the No.6 Tigers by a score of 27-12 Between the Hedges. We limped home to the Valley to face Virginia, and, now ranked No.18, got tied 20-20. So, once again, since Ken Hatfield was now 0-1-1 against the Cavaliers, folks quickly were on his case again. I don't publish attendance figures in these posts, but Clemson people were speaking with their wallets as well, as the Valley was not being sold out most of this season, at least in live attendance, even though we were putting a nationally ranked team on the field each week.

Things calmed down a little when No.12 NC State came to town, and No.19 Clemson handled them 29-19 in an ABC televised game. From that point on, the Tigers would run the table to finish the regular season. Wake Forest fell 28-10 in Clemson. North Carolina bowed down 21-6 in Chapel Hill. Holding at No.15, the Tigers knocked down the Maryland turtle pins 40-7 in the Valley. Then, the No.14 Tigers took that newfound offense on the road to the Roach, smoking the South Carolina Chickadees 41-24 in Williams-Brice. Clemson leads the series 53-32-4. But, due to the Coca Cola Company, this was NOT our last game of the regular season.

Now up to No.13, we went WAY out on the road to end the regular season, facing Duke in Tokyo, Japan at the “Coca-Cola Classic”. This resulted in a 33-21 Clemson win, and yet another invitation to the Florida Citrus Bowl. This time, the opponent for No.13 Clemson would be the No.14 California Golden Bears.

They certainly turned out to be Golden in the game, as they proceeded to maul us by a score of 37-13, and there was not a whole lot nice to say about the game. Among other things, Cal had a 72 yard punt return for a touchdown. They led 17-3 after the 1st quarter, and would intercept Clemson QB Deshane Cameron 3 times on the day. The stat sheet looked fairly even after the game, we outrushed them, while they outpassed us. This just goes to show that stats don't mean squat, it is the scoreboard that matters.

Appalachian State No. 8 W 34–0
Temple No. 8 W 37–7
No. 19 Georgia Tech No. 7 W 9–7
At Georgia No. 6 L 12–27
Virginia No. 18 T 20–20
No. 12 NC State No. 19 W 29–19
Wake Forest No. 16 W 28–10
At North Carolina No. 15 W 21–6
Maryland No. 15 W 40–7
At South Carolina No. 14 W 41–24 (Clemson leads series 53-32-4.)

No. 15 Clemson vs. Duke
(Coca-Cola Classic)
Tokyo, Japan
W 33–21

January 1, 1992
No. 13 Clemson vs. No. 14 California
Florida Citrus Bowl
L 13–37

Going into 1992, the core of the last Danny Ford team would be gone, and Ken Hatfield would be relying on his own recruits to make things happen on the field. How would he fare?
