220 - Woody Dantzler Holds ACC QB Rushing Record in a Game at 220

Clemson’s Woodrow (Woody) Dantzler didn’t just hold the Clemson record, but also the ACC record, for QB rushing yards in a game. Dantzler scorched UVa for 220 yards and 2 TDs on September 23, 2000. Dantzler also went 15 of 24 for 154 yards and another TD through the air.
Ranked #11, the Good Guys won that game in Charlottesville 31-10. Mrs. CBProf and I were at the game. It was quite glorious!

The amazing stuff began in his sophomore season against North Carolina. Dantzler came in for an injured Brandon Streeter and led the Tigers to victory thanks to his 56-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter in which he tiptoed the sideline and outraced the Tar Heel defense. He set his first record later that year against Maryland when he broke Bobby Gage’s single game total offense mark, which had stood for 52 years. Dantzler was 16 for 23 passing for 252 yards and rushed the ball 22 times for 183 yards in a touchdown for a total of 435 yards.
As the full-time starter his junior season, Dantzler shined. He reeled off electrifying touchdown runs of 75 and 45 yards as a part of his 220-yard rushing performance against Virginia, an ACC record for yards rushing by a quarterback. He reeled off four straight games of 100 yards rushing and 300 yards of total offense, a first in college football. He was on pace to become the first player in college football history to throw for 2,000 yards and run for 1,000 yards in one season until an ankle injury slowed him down. He will always be remembered as the guy who threw the ball for Rod Gardner’s game-winning catch against South Carolina in the Tigers’ 16-14 win.
His 1,028 yards rushing that season was an ACC quarterback record.

U.S. Route 220 runs for 678 miles from U.S. 1 in Rockingham, North Carolina to the Pennsylvania-New York state line in South Waverly, Pennsylvania and travels through North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. 123 of the miles are in North Carolina.
From the Hwy 133/Hwy 11 intersection at Keowee Toxaway State Park, it is 17 Miles to Whitewater Falls traveling about 6 miles east on Hwy 11, then about 11 miles north on Hwy 130 to just over the North Carolina line. Whitewater Falls is allegedly the highest waterfall east of the Rockies with a 411 foot drop. It is a short, easy hike on about a half mile paved trail from the parking lot. You can also hike to the bottom of the falls down a long flight of stairs to where it joins the Foothills Trail that follows the SC/NC border.
