161 - Chicago Cardinals Pick Lowell Bryant with Pick 161 of 1940 NFL Draft

Clemson RB Lowell Bryant (1937-1940) was drafted in the 18th Round of the 1940 NFL Draft by the Chicago Cardinals. Personally, I never knew the Cardinals were ever in Chicago (at least not as a home team).

I found this story interesting due to the timing and to the draft round of this pick.

Timing:

The world was facing war. The U.S. was trying to avoid the fighting. It had to be a tense time for young men coming out of college such as Lowell Bryant. Being drafted into the NFL had to beat being drafted by a certain other draft at that time!

NFL Draft Round:

I find it interesting that Pick 161 of the 1940 NFL Draft was in the 18th Round. Today, Pick 161 of the NFL Draft would be in the 5th Round.

According to Wikipedia, there were only ten NFL teams in 1940.The season ended as follows:

NFL Eastern Division:
- Washington Redskins: 9-2
- Brooklyn Dodgers: 8-3
- New York Giants: 6-4-1
- Pittsburgh Steelers: 2-7-2
- Philadelphia Eagles: 1-10

NFL Western Division:
- Chicago Bears: 8-3
- Green Bay Packers: 6-4-1
- Detroit Lions: 5-5-1
- Cleveland Rams: 4-6-1
- Chicago Cardinals: 2-7-2

I have searched for Lowell Bryant’s stats – both at Clemson and in the NFL – to no avail. With that said, if he is good enough for the Chicago Cardinals, hopefully, that means he is good enough to be recognized in O.J.’s Hill Watch!

Here’s to Clemson’s Lowell Bryant. May this Clemson football hero not be forgotten!

As for the Clemson team at this time:
According to ClemsonTigers.com, in Lowell’s Bryant’s senior season (1939), Clemson went 9-1. The only loss was a 7-6 loss to SEC member Tulane in New Orleans. The Good Guys ended the 1939 season with a Cotton Bowl over Boston College.

So Lowell Bryant was a teammate of Banks McFadden who was the #4 pick in that same draft. Must have been a little frustrating to have a great Clemson career overshadowed by one of the greatest players in the history of Clemson and college football. And as stated, must have been strange to finish college at the beginning of WWII.

I had an uncle that played around that time. June Pruitt played both basketball and football for Clemson in the late 30s early 40s. I've never been able to find any information on him though. He also fought in WW2.

South Carolina Highway 161 is a 28.91 mile state highway that starts on the south end at US 21 in Rock Hill, crosses I-77 in Rock Hill and US 321 in York and continues to the North Carolina state line northwest of Clover where it becomes NC 161.

The Greenville Braves were a class AA minor league team for the Atlanta Braves from 1984 to 2004. They played at Greenville Municipal Stadium on Mauldin Road all 21 years. The stadium also hosted the ACC baseball tournament from 1987 to 1995. The Greenville Braves had many future Atlanta Braves players and won several Southern League Championships. The 1992 team went 100-43 and is #23 on a list of the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time. Among the notable former players were Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Javy Lopez, David Justice and Mark Wohlers. Current Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker was the G-Braves manager the final 3 seasons. Sadly, the city wouldn't chip in enough to build another stadium, so the Braves moved on. The stadium is now Conestee Park.

Thanks DownSouthTiger for the idea.

Thanks, BigAl31! I enjoyed the Greenville Braves in my younger days!

I also loved seeing Clemson in the ACC Baseball Tournament in Greenville. If I remember correctly, the attendance at the ACC Tournament games at the G-Braves stadium in Mauldin was consistently strong. Sadly, they then moved out of Greenville despite the strong attendance.

Not as often as I stopped at the intersection of 161 and Highway 55 at Bethany (surprised that was even on a map). That was the side of town where I grew up. That was a deadly crossroad back in the day before a red light went up to replace the stop sign.

It never really sat well with me that the City of Greenville would not pony up funds to keep the G-Braves here.

Then turn around and build a stadium in the West End after the Braves left.

Thanks for the story BigAl31!!
