151 - Rod Gardner Made 151 Receptions for Clemson

For many sports fans in the Palmetto State, the first thing that comes to mind when they hear the name Rod Gardner is The Catch II. That was definitely a fun moment (unless you are a Chicken fan).

As great as that play was, however, Rod Gardner built an outstanding Clemson (and NFL) career well beyond that one play to beat the Chickens in 2000.

At Clemson:

WR Rod Gardner (1997-2000) came to Clemson as a QB. In September of his senior season (2020), ClemsonTigers.com published the following info on Gardner:

“In 1996, after a stellar career as a quarterback at Raines High School in Jacksonville, Florida, a headline about Rod Gardner’s commitment to Clemson in the Greenville News read: “Florida QB picks Clemson.”

Today, after four years of hard work in the weight room and on the practice field, the senior Gardner is the first single season 1,000-yard receiver in Clemson history and is the top returning receiver in the ACC. Not a bad career for someone who has only played receiver for three years and who came to Clemson with the hopes of playing quarterback.”

https://clemsontigers.com/change-in-position-benefits-rod-gardner-and-clemson/

Moving to wide receiver seemed to be a good fit for Gardner. According to the always reliable Wikipedia:

“Gardner played college football at Clemson University, where he started as a quarterback and safety on the practice squad (as a true freshman) before switching to wide receiver his sophomore year. He was selected as a second team All-ACC during his junior year after setting the school record for catches, yards, and receptions per game. His senior year, he not only made first team All-ACC, but was a first team All-American as well. In 2000, he was one of the ten finalists for the Biletnikoff Award after posting six touchdowns on 51 receptions and 956 yards.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Gardner#cite_note-2

ClemsonTigers.com adds the following accolades as well:

“...The 1999 season saw the emergence of Gardner as one the top receivers in the nation. His 80 total receptions broke the Clemson single season record previously held by Tony Horne (70). His 73 catches during the regular season led the ACC and were tied for the sixth-best single season total in league history. He was second in the league and 17th in the nation with 6.6 receptions per game and he set the Clemson single game record with 11 catches in the season opener against Marshall.

https://clemsontigers.com/change-in-position-benefits-rod-gardner-and-clemson/#:~:text=He%20was%20second%20in%20the,the%20season%20opener%20against%20Marshall.

And, it does not stop there. In addition to breaking the Clemson single season record as stated above, Gardner also set the Clemson record for receiving yards in a game. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Clemson’s Rod Gardner, a 6-4, 215-pound senior from Jacksonville, Fla., had seven receptions for 182 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers’ win over North Carolina. Gardner established a school record for reception yards in a game, breaking the 23-year-old record of 163 held by Jerry Butler against Georgia Tech in 1977. Gardner also tied the Clemson record for touchdown receptions in the game with three.”

https://clemsontigers.com/acc-football-players-of-the-week-2/

Sports-Reference.com also provides Garner’s very impressive stats at Clemson:

Combined 1997-2000 Clemson Stats:
- 151 Receptions for 2,302 Yards
- 12 Receiving Touchdowns
- 5 Carries for 0 Yards
- 8 Kick Returns for 168 Yards (21.0 Average)
- 2 Pass Completions for 15 Yards (7.5 Average)

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/rod-gardner-1.html

Of note: some of Rod Gardner’s Clemson records have since been broken. That said, Gardner still ranks in the Top 10 in Clemson history in receptions and in receiving yards.

Well done, Mr. Gardner! (Not too bad for a QB and Safety who decided to give WR a try.)

After Clemson:

After his Clemson playing days ended, Gardner wanted his strong play on the field to speak on his behalf to NFL scouts. According to the GoUpstate (published just prior to the April 2001 NFL Draft):

He wants to be judged by his performance on the field. "That's my strong side, producing on the field in the big game, making a big play," Gardner said.

https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2001/04/20/clemson-wr-gardner-raises-his-draft-stock/29632745007/

NFL teams certainly took notice. That same 2001 GoUpstate article provided the following insights from NFL scouts:

“One NFL player personnel director compared Gardner to Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Cris Carter, who has crafted a stellar career by using his size efficiently and catching everything in sight, especially in key situations. "(Gardner) is such a big, strong guy," said Cleveland Browns vice president of football operations Dwight Clark, like Gardner a former Clemson receiver. "He takes the ball away from players. That's his big attribute."

https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2001/04/20/clemson-wr-gardner-raises-his-draft-stock/29632745007/

Such praise yielded a high reward. The Washington Redskins selected Rod Garner as the 15th pick of the 2001 NFL Draft. Gardner played six NFL seasons for the Washington Redskins, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Carolina Panthers, and the Kansas City Chiefs. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Gardner registered the following stats during those six seasons:

NFL Career:
- 242 Receptions for 3,165 Yards (13.1 Average)
- 23 Touchdowns
- 2 Pass Completions for 46 Yards (23.0 Average)
- 2 Passing Touchdowns

With his NFL playing career over, Gardner has now owns a fitness brand called “Gstrongfit.”

Ever the competitor, Rod Gardner and his wife recently chose to compete on the Amazing Race. I have seen several TNetters post about Gardner’s involvement in the show this season which began airing March 2024. According to On3.com:

“Rod Gardner and wife, Leticia, are one of 13 teams who will competing at sites around the world to win the 36th edition of The Amazing Race. The Gardners are the first confirmed team on this season’s show, which premieres March 13 on CBS.

If you’re a fan of Clemson, then you remember Gardner. He played there from 1997-2000 back when Tommy Bowden was the coach and Rich Rodriguez was his offensive coordinator. He set school single-season records for catches, yards and touchdowns. Plus, he was 6-3 and 215 pounds, with 4.48-second speed in the 40-yard dash.

Gardner told CBS Sports that the reality show tested some key aspects of the couple’s marriage.

“I was all in from the beginning, but I didn’t know how we were going to do it as a couple,” Rod said. “We really had to see and test out our relationship and our marriage, and see where we stand under pressure, how our communication skills are. … I didn’t know what to expect when we got on the show but we definitely had some eye-opening moments.”

As for that spectacular 50-yard reception to bring down the Gamechickens in 2000?

The Chickens had just scored with under a minute left in the game to take a 14-13 lead. Clemson faced third and long and time running out when Gardner took over:

(Of note: I included this video last week in a player profile on K Aaron Hunt. It somehow seemed appropriate here as well.)

South Carolina Highway 151, known as "the road to the beach" by residents of the Charlotte area, is a 52.85 mile state highway that runs from the northwest end at US 601/SC 151 Bus in Pageland to the southeast end at US 52/US 401/SC 34 in Darlington.

Lander is a public university in Greenwood, SC. It was founded in 1872 by clergyman Samuel Lander as Williamston Female College (Another one that started as a women's college; I guess SC women were smarter than the men back then). It became Lander College in 1904, coeducational in 1943, and Lander University in 1992. Lander's 190 acre campus in the heart of downtown Greenwood has about 4,000 students in over 90 majors in 7 colleges including an excellent nursing program with a new building to be constructed. The athletic teams, the Bearcats, compete in NCAA Division II in the Peach Belt Conference. Notable alumni include former SC Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman, actress and Miss Universe 1954 Miriam Stevenson, and renowned Hill Watcher O.J.
