146 - NY Giants Select Bob Hudson with Pick 146 of 1951 NFL Draft

Clemson’s stars from the late 1940s and early 1950s might not get much attention after so many decades have passed. But OL/E/DL/LB Bob Hudson played an integral role in Clemson’s success during this time. We might not have great stats on Hudson, but after his Clemson career, he played many seasons of professional football, was selected to the South Carolina Hall of Fame, and was selected to the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame.

While at Clemson:

After playing end in his first two seasons, Hudson moved to right tackle to address an area of low depth. As we still see today, it takes a special athlete to be able to play more than one position at a high level. As stated in Clemson’s 1949 media guide:

In 1950, Hudson was back to playing end when he scored against Boston College as Clemson was in the process of completing an undefeated 9-0-1 season. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“A minute later, Boston College gambled and failed on a fourth-down play at midfield. Cone then bulled his way for 11 yards and a first down, aggravating his rib cage in the process. After backup fullback Marion Thompson gained five yards, Calvert passed the final 31 yards to end Bob Hudson for the third third-quarter touchdown.”

After Clemson:

The NY Giants selected Bob Hudson in the 12th Round (Pick 146) of the 1951 NFL Draft. According to Pro-Football-Reference, Hudson played a variety of positions – both offensive and defensive – while playing in the NFL and in the AFL between 1951 and 1961. According to Pro-Football Reference.com, he registered the following stats for the NFL: NY Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins; and AFL: Denver Broncos, and Dallas Texans (Yes, Dallas Texans is correct):

- 8 Receptions for 162 Yards
- 19 Interceptions with 242 Return Yards
- 2 Fumble Recoveries with 11 Return Yards

According to Hudson’s South Carolina Hall of Fame webpage:

He was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980.

It's great reading about these guys before my time. It's also amazing to see how much bigger the players of today have become. Today's quarterbacks are as big as offensive linemen in some instances.

Even in the mid-'60s , players were not close to those of today. Wayne Mass was All American and played tackle at 250 and was considered large.

South Carolina Highway 146, known as Woodruff Road in much of Greenville County and 3 other names in parts of Greenville and Spartanburg counties, is a 33.45 mile state highway that starts on the west end at US 276 in Greenville to the east end at SC 56 in Cross Anchor, going through Simpsonville and Woodruff on the way and is a traffic nightmare on weekday mornings and evenings, Saturdays, and Thanksgiving to New Years.

I've been taking Sundays off from posting the little stories and pics to rest like some of you say to do and bc I do other stuff on Saturdays like errands, odd jobs, yardwork, watching sports, shopping, etc. TBH, those posts take me probably 30 to 45 minutes to make with the writeups and finding appropriate pics and sizing them. I'm not as efficient as CBProf, who probably does his in about 10 or 15 minutes. And sometimes it is hard to think of ideas.

Another thing has been bugging me a bit. I haven't been citing my sources like Prof does, so sometimes I feel guilty about that. But most of my info comes from Wikipedia with occasional info from other sources and a lot of it could be considered common knowledge. And I'm not really presenting it as my own and try to reword as much as I can, but I should probably cite sources, at least when it's not from Wiki. Any thoughts on this? Deep ponderings.

BigAl31®,
I like your stories that you post. They are informative and unlike Woodruff Rd, bring a smile to my face!
As far as the citing sources is concerned, I don’t think that it is necessary - you’re posting for the reader’s enjoyment, not publishing a paper in a journal😉.

I especially like your write ups in the different colleges and universities around the South!

My buddy owns a farm in Cross Anchor were hwy 146 starts. I always enjoy going there to get away from modern conveniences like electricity and running water. It's a nice change of pace in this mechanized world we live in.

Also keep poasting my friend. What you share is appreciated.

Hey BigAl31®! Thank you for sharing the personal aspects behind your posts. I would echo DownSouthTiger's comments and Pig's comments in that I enjoy your posts as well. They are both interesting and fun. Your stories are very much appreciated.

For what it's worth, I started looking for a way to connect the daily Hill Watch count to Clemson, and particularly to Clemson football, because it was fun for me to do so. I enjoy doing it. Only after doing it for a few days did I realize that it could be done daily. Clemson football provides so many statistics that having something each day was not going to be a problem. The problem was going to be how to cite everyone who has contributed to Clemson football in a mere 200 or so days.

You seem like you enjoy writing your posts - which is great. Please keep doing it as long as it is enjoyable for you! But, on days when it might be difficult to do it, you should never feel like you have to do it. I just appreciate all that you have already contributed! I know I speak for others in saying that as well. And, if it stops being fun you should not feel like you ever have to do it.

Also, I would say that there is no need for you to feel like you have to cite your source for Hill Watch. That really would be up to you. I cite the sources in my posts because I do a LOT of copy and pasting. It only seems fair to cite where I am copying from. I also figure if someone else finds something interesting, then they can go to that source and read more.

We appreciate you, Friend!

Been through Cross Anchor numerous times on Highway 49 which runs from Laurens to Charlotte (goes through York instead of Clover). As far as references to sources, I am sure most of your information is considered common knowledge that people can acquire from many places and not unique to one source to make it worth your extra time to give credit. Since you don't benefit from giving the information financially, - no problems and guilt should be felt.

I do have fun with the posts as Prof does, with occasional challenges with the work schedule. And I learn a lot from them and they're good mental exercise for an aging brain.

And as far as sources go, I remember that I give Wikipedia $5 or $10 on occasion, so maybe they'll go easy on me when the FBI knocks on my door lol. That was actually a fear of mine about 20 or so years ago when I was downloading songs off filesharing sites and hearing stories about people getting busted. At one point, I had a couple of thousand downloads until my computer crashed and I decided to never do that again. I have regret and remorse for my digital thievery and relief that the statute of limitations has probably run out on that.

Thanks again nice people for the input.
