Regarding Clemson’s roster development vs FSU’s foster built via the portal. Who will be right at the end of this season, Dabo or Norvell? Josh did have some great points.

Norvell has said that he is hitting the portal hard temporarily until he can develop his recruiting.
May be true. No coach really wants to bring one year rentals out of the portal year after year.
It's hard to transition from hired guns to developing a program.
It is a culture thing.

Grew up in Columbus, GA.

Actually a little town just outside of it, but he claims Columbus as his hometown.
Not sure what it is like now, but when I lived there for 5 years, grades 7-11, late 1960s. The town was 50/50 UGA/Auburn fans. (From 1916 to 1958 the UGA/Auburn game was played in Columbus every year.)

They could both be right, yet someone has to come out on top. Said differently there are multiple ways to build a roster. UGA chooses to buy HS prospects for the most part although they will dip in the portal occasionally. FSU buys a roster from both the HS and Portal ranks. Dabo builds out of the HS ranks from the guys who don't expect to get paid up front. Others like Nancy St. and VT use both the portal and HS but typically are not willing to pay the big bucks.
The process a coach chooses to use cannot be judged on one season. How many coaches had a good season or two then imploded. The true measure of a process is sustainability over many seasons with success on the field, in the classroom and on main street.

Wouldn’t succeeding mean he had success?

Based on the current reality, you can't blame a coach who inherits a mess to go to the portal in order to speed up a turnaround. I'm assume Norvell would rather recruit at a top 5 level right out of the gate but that usually requires some on field success first.
Can't really expect a coach with an established program to go out and bring in a dozen free agents every year, mainly because they don't need to.
Wouldn't hurt Clemsons culture to bring in 3-4 impact players at positions of need every year but Dabo is handling it the way he sees fit. Heck he may have even tried to snag a few of these guys but didn't have any luck. Can't imagine he would be calling attention to that fact if it were the case.

True but impact players often require tampering and upfront NIL which is against the spirit and letter of the rules. Being able to look yourself in the mirror knowing you are doing things the right way has to count for something.

I think the tampering issue may have a lot to do with why Dabo doesn’t use the portal. Its my impression that tampering is involved with most of the big name kids that change schools and maybe he doesn’t want to get involved in that.

I like Pate. I'm one of his subscribers.
But, here is the situation.
When Norvell came to FSU if he had decided to build the roster through HS recruiting, he would be an assistant coach at a G5 school today. His record would have probably been 3-8 then 2-9 then looking for a job. The talent level was horrible, the locker room culture was worse. (Taggart did not recruit a single QB two years in a row.) First year for Norvell was COVID. He couldn't go out and meet HS coaches or players face to face. No way to build relationships. Relying on the portal was the only option.
This recruiting cycle (2024 class) is the first year he has been able to get quality (4 and 5 star talent) to even come to campus for a visit, much less get them to commit to FSU.
I suspect that if Norvell continues to be successful on the field you will see less portal and more HS signees in the coming years.
The point Pate is missing, or at least not stating, is Dabo had a choice. He could use the portal or not and be successful. (I think he made the right choice.) Norvell had a choice, too. Use the portal or die.

I guess if Norvell hadn't used the portal...
Yall probably be looking for another coach now....

If “kids” were allowed to stay in school for 9 years like they do on his Netflix show; then you definitely have to give the edge to the programs that develop players over transfer schools.
