Navy, the AAC championship and bowl selection...

Nov 11, 2015, 9:17 PM

So, we had an interesting conversation while not working today. So what happens if...

Navy wins out conference play then wins the AAC championship game. They are currently, and probably will still be, the highest ranked of the Group of Five conference champions (MAC, AAC, Conference USA, Sunbelt, Mountain West). Winning to that point should entitle them to a Big 6 bowl game.

Bowl selections are usually held that Sunday night after the championship game weekend.

BUT!

Navy would have one more game on their schedule, with the Army/Navy the next weekend. In all honesty, Navy should handle Army pretty readily this year. But...they could lose.

So, if Navy wins the AAC championship game, does the final bowl selections get delayed until after the Army/Navy game? Or would Navy be granted a Big 6 bowl invite, even with the game the next weekend? What happens if Navy loses to Army after already getting that invite? (Let's face it, a 2-loss Navy team isn't likely to be ranked.) Would chaos ensue?

This was covered during Tuesday's rankings show... a special rankings meeting would occur to determine/confirm Navy's eligibility for a New Years 6 bowl if necessary.

Summary — If the committee believes the result of the Army-Navy game could affect Army’s or Navy’s ranking and therefore its place in the playoff or its selection as the group of five representative, only the pairings that affect Army and Navy would be delayed until after the Army-Navy game.
