Heisman watch

Nov 8, 2016, 4:29 PM

With Lamar Jackson the clear front runner, I would have thought his stats would be more eye popping. I guess its his run game that makes him so high up there. Compared to Watson, Lamar had a 59% completion rating compared to Watson's 67%. Jackson has only throw for 2 more TD's than Watson. Total passing yards isn't far supior than Watson either, 2700 to 2500 est. The level of competition is heavily favored for Watson. If they were looking at just stats then Washington's qb should be number 1. Hopefully Watson gets that invite back to NY.

I would still take DW4 over any other QB

without hesitation. He is simply the best.

Watson will get to NY and probably finish second barring injury between now and the ACCCG, or some crazy game by Barrett, Browning, or Peppers in a high-profile game.

He is a top 5 rusher in the nation. You cannot just compare the passing stats.

As a passer, its a close race on paper. Lamar has already rushed for over 1,100 yards and 19 TDs though. They have played lesser opponents but he is a head and neck above the rest so far this season. HOWEVA, if I need a QB to lead me on a game winning drive in the Natty, me and 127 out of the 128 FBS coaches aside from Petrino would choose Deshaun Watson to win the game

Jackson is 170-of-288 for 2,753 yards. 26 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He's averaging 306 yards per game with a passing efficiency rating of 164.9. While Jackson may not have as high a completion % as Watson (Jackson 59% vs Watson at 64%), Jackson average yards per completion are 9.6 ypc compared to Watson's 7.8 ypc.

Rushing Jackson has 1,183 rushing yards for an average of 7.3 per carry, 131.4 per game and 19 rushing touchdowns. Watson has only 2 rushing TD's.

Jackson is on pace to finish the regular season with 5,248 total yards, more than any Heisman winner in history

Jackson will win

Nov 8, 2016, 5:00 PM

and it's not outrageous for him to win IMO. What I would like compared is play time. I feel like Jackson has played WAY more than Watson and against vastly inferior opponents. This stat padding should be considered.

I think most informed fans/coaches would take Watson to lead their team over Jackson any day.

IMO this is a big trap year for the Heisman house. Watson really should have won it last year so they have that pressure but the media just loves Jackson. They could potentially be set up for Clemson to flip the on button and crush the post season after Jackson/Browing win and those two have a decent chance of flopping in their final game since their schedules were pretty weak. The Heisman house could look like a bunch of chumps that bought empty stats come January.

Not true. Watson has played more

Nov 8, 2016, 6:46 PM

minutes because we have had so many close games.

My problem with Lamar is that he plays 4 quarters even in

Nov 8, 2016, 5:18 PM

blowouts.

I think he is inarguably the most dynamic player in the country this year but Petrino pads his stats like crazy. The guy had 7 TDs last week which is eye-popping until you realize they still had him playing in a 45-7 game in the 2nd half. He's done that in every game. You think Watson couldn't have put up similar numbers against BC if we let him play the whole game?

When they went head-to-head this year, I think it was a total wash, with Watson making the plays to win the game when it counted (2 HUGE scoring drives) and Jackson not. It really comes down to what the Heisman is supposed to reward. The "best player" (what the award purports to be for)? The "best player on the best team" (what it has become for some reason)? Or the most "dynamic player"? It's a moving target every year.

Re: My problem with Lamar is that he plays 4 quarters even in

Nov 8, 2016, 5:35 PM

Yeah, nobody loves a blowout like Bobby Petrino.

I have a notion this will all come out in the wash, though. Keep in mind, counting the ACC Championship Game, there's still a full month left for Deshaun to make his case, whereas Lamar Jackson is running out of opportunities to impress, especially against anyone with a pulse. And if Jackson messes up and somehow drops a loss anytime in the last three, I think he's done. Putting up gaudy stats are great; show me the wins. He already has one head-to-head loss against Watson; he can't take another mess-up.

Browning can't take even a single loss. His pure passing stats are great but he'll be statistically inferior to Jackson every which way; nobody's going to vote in an undynamic white-boy pocket passer in off an 11-1 team especially when there's talents like Jackson and Watson around.

Maybe it is Jackson in a walkaway. It usually doesn't play like that, though. November usually gets interesting.

Had Virginia pulled off that upset, I'd like Watson's

Nov 8, 2016, 6:21 PM

chances even more. I'm not sure how that ball didn't get batted down on 4th down. It went right between two defenders' hands.

LJ has more hype and video game highlights. That equals the Heisman apparently these days.

I'll take the best QB in CFB and more W's thank you.

Case in Point, the Louis highlight against UVA says nothing about the fact that UL is overrated or that LJ played bad... just that he is the savior for throwing a bomb at the wire. Whatever.

Yea, DW just doesn't have the numbers

Nov 8, 2016, 6:43 PM

compared to Jackson. Jackson has 3 times as many rushing yards and only 6 interceptions.
