Headline says it all: Hokies Hammer Tigers in Round 2 Opener

Mar 3, 2022, 2:21 PM

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – To put it simply, Virginia Tech made its 2022 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament one to remember.

The fifth-seeded Hokies opened play in this year’s event by rolling to an 82-60 win over No. 13 Clemson in Thursday’s second-round session opener at Greensboro Coliseum, shooting 59 percent from the floor and placing four players in double figures.

Virginia Tech (22-8) moved on to Friday’s 11 a.m. quarterfinal, where the Hokies will face fourth-seeded North Carolina. The teams split a pair of league games during the regular season, with UNC winning 71-46 in Chapel Hill on Jan. 9 and Virginia Tech winning 66-61 at home on Feb. 13

With Thursday’s loss, Clemson (10-21) closed out the 2021-22 season.

Virginia Tech’s Alisha Sheppard knocked down four shots from 3-point range and led all scorers with 20 points. ACC Player of the Year Elizabeth Kitley finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Kayana Taylor had 16 points, and Georgia Amoore scored 15.

The Hokies got off to a blazing start, building a 25-15 lead in the opening 10 minutes. Virginia Tech shot 82 percent from the floor in the first quarter (9-for-11), including a 4-for-5 showing from 3-point range.

The second quarter offered more of the same, as the Hokies continued their torrid shooting en route to a 53-30 lead at the break. The halftime stat sheet showed Virginia Tech still shooting 79 percent from the floor, and four Hokies had already reached double figures.

The Tigers could get no closer than 18 points in the second half as Virginia Tech reached the tournament quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.

The Hokies sank 19-of-22 free throws and outrebounded the Tigers 34-23. The Tigers made 20-of-23 from the foul line but shot just 34 percent from the floor and were 0-for-9 on threes.

Clemson’s Delicia Washington followed up Wednesday’s 33-point effort versus Syracuse with a team-high 19 points on Thursday. Amari Robinson and Kionna Gaines added 11 apiece for the Tigers.

OF NOTE
- Virginia Tech’s 22-point win is tied for the biggest margin of victory in a second-round game in ACC Tournament history.

- The Hokies’ 53 first-half points broke a program record for points in a half in an ACC Tournament contest (Previous was 51 versus Syracuse March 2, 2018).

- The Hokies lead all-time series 15-13, including two wins over Clemson this season.

- Clemson fell to 0-6 this season when the opponent scores more than 80 points.
